Watch: how a gazette notification is made
A short Hindi walkthrough of the full gazette notification process, start to finish.
A gazette service in India files your notification in the Gazette of India or a State Gazette. Personal notices, including name, date of birth, religion and gender changes, publish in Part IV. The Central fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, and publication usually takes 30 to 45 days.
People search for a gazette service in India for very different reasons. One person wants a new name on their passport. Another needs a wrong date of birth fixed before a job joining. A parent wants a child's record settled before a school admission. A fourth has a gazette that printed with a mistake in it and needs a correction published. All four are gazette work, and all four follow different document sets.
A Gazette notification is a formal announcement printed in the official journal of the Government. Once it carries a page number and a publication date, it becomes the record that Aadhaar, PAN, passport offices, banks, schools and employers accept. Nothing else on your desk does that job, which is why an affidavit alone keeps getting refused.

- Part IV of the Gazette of India carries notices from private individuals. Government and statutory notices sit in Parts I to III.
- The Central Gazette is accepted everywhere in India. A State Gazette is reliable mainly inside that state.
- There is exactly one Central Gazette office and it is in Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.
- The fee is non-refundable, so a spelling error costs the full fee again as a correction notification.
- Some jobs are not gazette work at all, including birth certificate corrections and company name changes.
What is the Gazette of India?
Understanding which Part your notice belongs in saves you the most common wasted application.
The Gazette of India is the official public journal of the Government of India. It is published by the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, working with the Directorate of Printing. An announcement printed there becomes part of the permanent public record, which is exactly why Government offices treat it as proof.
The Gazette is split into four Parts, and each Part carries a different kind of notice. Your personal notification belongs in one of them and only one.
| Part | What it carries | Does it apply to you? |
|---|---|---|
| Part I | Non-statutory notifications from the Ministries: general rules and orders, parliamentary matters, executive resolutions. | No. Government business only. |
| Part II | Statutory rules and orders that carry legal force once published, including Ministry issuances and defence notifications. | No. Government business only. |
| Part III | Notifications from bodies that are not the Government itself: High Courts, the Union Public Service Commission, the Comptroller and Auditor General, and statutory bodies. | No, unless you are filing on behalf of a statutory body. |
| Part IV | Advertisements and notices from private individuals and private bodies. This is where a name change, date of birth correction, religion change or gender change is published. | Yes. This is your Part. |
Ordinary and Extraordinary editions
The Gazette comes out in two forms. The Ordinary or weekly edition is published on a fixed day each week, and it carries routine notifications including Part IV personal notices. The Extraordinary edition can be published on any day, and it is used when something is urgent enough that it cannot wait for the weekly issue. A personal name change is not urgent Government business, so it goes in the ordinary weekly edition.
Where the copy actually comes from
An electronic edition of the Gazette has been published since 2008, and today the published PDF is downloaded free of cost from egazette.gov.in. There is no separate paper original waiting for you to collect, and nobody should charge you for the download itself. If a provider bills you for "getting the gazette copy" after publication, that part is not a real cost.
Every type of gazette notification we handle
Nine different jobs, one process, nine different document sets. Find yours below.
1. Name change
The most common gazette by a wide margin. A full change of first name, middle name, surname or any combination. The affidavit states the old full name and the new full name exactly as they will print.
2. Surname change after marriage
Maiden name to married name, with the marriage certificate attached as supporting proof. The certificate alone does not change your name in Government records, which surprises most people at the passport counter.
3. Minor name change
For anyone under 18. Both parents or the legal guardian apply on the child's behalf and normally both sign the affidavit. The minor rate applies to the Central Gazette fee.
4. Spelling correction
A wrong spelling that has followed you across documents since school. Treated as a change rather than a correction, because the gazette records the move from one spelling to the other.
5. Father or mother name correction
Where a parent's name is recorded wrongly inside your own documents. Needs the parent's own ID as supporting proof, and sometimes their affidavit alongside yours.
6. Date of birth change
Possible through the gazette, but read the honest warning below. Many date of birth problems are record corrections at the issuing office, not gazette matters, and employers often ask for the school record rather than the gazette.
7. Religion change
A declaration of change of religion, published so that personal law and record-keeping follow the change. Handled quietly, with the supporting declaration prepared alongside the affidavit.
8. Gender change notification
The Department of Publication publishes guidelines covering change of name and gender in a public notice. The document set differs from a plain name change and we prepare it to the current guideline.
9. Correction to a published gazette
Where a notification has already printed with an error in it. A fresh correction notification has to be published, and the fee is payable again because the original fee is non-refundable.
Central Gazette or State Gazette, which do you need?
This is the first real decision, and picking wrong is expensive because the fee is non-refundable.
India runs two parallel routes. The Central Gazette is the Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication in Delhi, with personal notices in Part IV. The State Gazette is published by a State Government Press, and each state runs it differently. Some states have a smooth personal route, some accept only Government notifications, and some quietly send private applicants to the Central Gazette instead.
The practical test is simple. Ask where the new record has to be accepted. If the answer includes a passport, a visa, a central Government job, an armed forces record, a bank with branches across the country, or any chance of moving state later, take the Central route. If your whole record set stays inside one state, a State Gazette will do the job at a lower cost.
| Point of comparison | Central Gazette of India | State Gazette |
|---|---|---|
| Published by | Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054 | Your State Government Press |
| Where it appears | Part IV of the Gazette of India | The state's own gazette, numbered its own way |
| Accepted | Everywhere in India and by foreign missions | Reliably within that state, sometimes questioned outside it |
| Government fee | Commonly Rs 1,100 adult and Rs 1,700 minor, revised each financial year | Varies by state, often lower |
| Payment | BharatKosh, the Non-Tax Receipt Portal | State treasury challan or the state portal |
| Publication time | Commonly 30 to 45 days | Varies widely, from 2 weeks to more than 2 months |
| Download | Free from egazette.gov.in | From the state e-Gazette portal, where one exists |
| Which types | All nine types listed above | Usually name change only. Gender and religion routes vary by state. |
| Best for | Passport, visa, central jobs, banking, anything national | State jobs, state board records, local land and revenue records |
The three legal steps behind every gazette
Whatever your type, the spine of the process is the same. Nobody can skip a step for you.
The affidavit
An affidavit is prepared on non-judicial stamp paper stating the old detail, the new detail, your address and the reason for the change, then signed before a notary public with a witness. This is a sworn statement, so what is written here is what prints in the gazette.
The newspaper notice
The change is published in two newspapers, one in the regional or state language and one in English, both circulating where you live, with identical wording. Keep the complete original printed page including the masthead and the date. A cutting is not accepted.
The gazette notification
The complete file goes to the Department of Publication in Delhi for the Central Gazette, or to your State Government Press. The fee is paid through BharatKosh. Once printed in Part IV, you download the PDF, and that PDF is your legal proof.
Step 1 in detail: getting the affidavit right
The affidavit is short, but everything else copies from it. If your new name is spelt Aarav in the affidavit and Arav in the newspaper, the gazette office returns the file. We type the affidavit, read it back to you letter by letter before printing, and only then arrange notarisation. For a minor, both parents sign. For a religion or gender notification, an additional declaration sits alongside the affidavit.
Step 2 in detail: the newspaper notice
Two papers, two languages, identical wording. The notice carries the old detail, the new detail, your address and the affidavit date. Publication charges depend on the paper and the city, and this is the most variable cost in the whole process. We book the space, check the proof before it prints, and collect the original full pages for your file.
Step 3 in detail: filing the gazette
The Central Gazette file needs the original newspaper page, an undertaking, two copies of the prescribed form, a soft copy of the notice text, self-attested ID proof for you and for your witness, two passport size photographs and a request letter addressed to the Controller of Publications. The fee is paid only through BharatKosh, since direct bank transfers were discontinued. Once printed, the PDF is downloadable free from egazette.gov.in.
Documents needed, by gazette type
Everyone needs the base set. Your type then adds its own supporting papers.
The base set, everyone
- Photo ID showing the current detail: Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID or Passport
- Address proof, which can be the same Aadhaar
- Two recent passport size photographs
- Self-attested photocopy of one witness ID proof
- The notarised affidavit
- Both original newspaper pages, complete and unclipped
What your type adds
- Surname after marriage: marriage certificate
- Reverting after divorce: decree of divorce
- Minor: birth certificate, school record, ID of both parents, custody order where only one parent signs
- Parent name correction: that parent's own photo ID
- Date of birth: birth certificate and school leaving certificate, so we can tell you first whether a gazette is even the right route
- Religion change: a declaration of the change, prepared with the affidavit
- Gender change: the document set set out in the Department of Publication guidelines for change of name and gender
- Correction to a published gazette: the printed gazette page, your acknowledgement and the original submitted form
Gazette fees in India, explained honestly
Government fees and market costs are different things. Here is both, separated.
| Item | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Central Gazette, adult | Rs 1,100 | Paid through BharatKosh. The Department of Publication states the fee is revised each financial year, so confirm it on the day you file. |
| Central Gazette, minor | Rs 1,700 | Applies to anyone under 18. Also paid through BharatKosh. |
| Stamp paper and notary | Rs 100 to Rs 500 | Stamp paper value differs by state. |
| Newspaper notice, two papers | Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 | The widest variable. Metro English dailies cost far more than regional papers. |
| Applying from abroad | Around Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,000 | Higher rate for applicants outside India. |
| Correction notification | Full fee again | The original fee is non-refundable, so an error in your own file costs the whole amount a second time. |
| Statutory body notice, Part III Section 4 | Rs 2,000 per page | A different Part with a different rate. Listed here only so you can tell it apart from your Part IV notice. |
| Realistic self-done total | Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000 | Everything above added together, excluding travel and repeat trips. |
| Documentadvisor assistance | Quoted per case | Charged separately from Government fees. Call 9540005002 for a fixed quote before you commit. |
Be careful with advertisements offering a "gazette at Rs 999". The Central Gazette Government fee alone is more than that, so a price below the Government fee means either a State Gazette in a state you may not live in, or an affidavit dressed up as a gazette. Ask any provider two questions: which gazette, and does the price include the Government fee.
How long does a gazette take in India?
Realistic timings, not the best case that nobody actually gets.
Day 1 to 2
Type confirmed, documents collected, affidavit drafted, spelling agreed with you in writing, notarisation arranged.
Day 3 to 7
Notice booked in one regional language paper and one English paper. Original full pages collected.
Day 7 to 10
Gazette file assembled, fee paid through BharatKosh, application submitted and acknowledged.
Day 30 to 45
Notification printed in Part IV. We download the PDF from the e-Gazette portal and send it with the update checklist.
Total for the Central route is commonly 3 to 7 weeks end to end. State Gazette timelines vary a great deal, from about two weeks in a few states to more than two months in others. Anyone promising a Central Gazette in 3 days is describing an affidavit, not a gazette.
We file gazettes across all of India
The Central Gazette is filed in Delhi, so your location does not limit you. For a State Gazette we work with the relevant State Government Press.
Living outside India? The Central Gazette accepts applications from abroad at a higher fee, commonly around Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,000. Call us before you start so the paperwork is prepared in the right form.
Which state gazette route applies to you?
Every state runs its own press and its own rules. This is where each one publishes, and whether a private notification is realistically open to you there.
| State | Publishing body or portal | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Uttar Pradesh | Directorate of Printing and Stationery, dpsup.up.gov.in | Private applicants are commonly directed to the Central Gazette. |
| Bihar | Bihar Secretariat Press, Gulzarbagh, Patna, egazette.bihar.gov.in | A real state route exists. Applications are often submitted at the Gulzarbagh press. |
| Maharashtra | Directorate of Government Printing and Stationery, dgps.maharashtra.gov.in | One of the better organised state routes, with online application and download. |
| Haryana | egazetteharyana.gov.in, with services listed on the Saral portal | State route available. Check Saral for the current service listing. |
| Rajasthan | REAMS, the Rajasthan e-Gazette system | State route available for residents of Rajasthan. |
| West Bengal | Part II gazette, wbgazettepart2.in | Personal notices go in the state's Part II, not Part IV. |
| Karnataka | e-Rajyapatra, Karnataka Government Press | State route available, published as the Karnataka Rajyapatra. |
| Tamil Nadu | Stationery and Printing Department, stationeryprinting.tn.gov.in | State route available. Tamil and English newspapers are the usual pairing. |
| Gujarat | egazette.gujarat.gov.in | State route available for Gujarat residents. |
| Odisha | egazette.odisha.gov.in | State route available, published by the Odisha Government Press. |
| Andhra Pradesh | apegazette.cgg.gov.in | State route available. Telugu and English newspapers are the usual pairing. |
| Telangana | tggazette.cgg.gov.in | Separate from the Andhra Pradesh gazette since the state was formed. |
| Kerala | Government Press, printing.kerala.gov.in | State route available, published as the Kerala Gazette. |
| Himachal Pradesh | Rajpatra, rajpatrahimachal.nic.in | State route available for Himachal residents. |
| Assam | Directorate of Printing and Stationery, dpns.assam.gov.in | Assam has a state gazette, but many North East applicants still use the Central route. |
| Uttarakhand | Uttarakhand Rajpatra, published via uk.gov.in | State route available for Uttarakhand residents. |
| Delhi and everywhere else | Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054 | The Central Gazette. Open to every resident of India regardless of state, and accepted everywhere. |
Key terms explained
The words that appear on every gazette website, in language people actually use.
- Gazette notification
- A formal announcement printed in the official journal of the Government. For a personal change it is the document that Aadhaar, PAN, passport offices, banks and employers accept as proof.
- Gazette of India
- The Central Gazette, published by the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. It is accepted everywhere in India and by foreign missions.
- Part IV
- The section of the Gazette of India that carries advertisements and notices from private individuals and private bodies. Every personal notification publishes here.
- Ordinary gazette
- The weekly edition, published on a fixed day. Personal Part IV notices appear in this edition.
- Extraordinary gazette
- An edition published on any day when a notification is too urgent to wait for the weekly issue. Personal notices do not use it.
- State Gazette
- A gazette published by a State Government Press. A separate publication from the Gazette of India, with its own numbering, fee and timeline.
- Affidavit
- A written statement you swear is true, signed before a notary public. It records the old detail, the new detail, your address and the reason for the change.
- Notary public
- A person authorised by the Government to witness signatures and certify documents. Notarisation is done in person, and it is the one step that cannot be completed online.
- Non-judicial stamp paper
- Government stamped paper used for affidavits and agreements. The value required differs from state to state and is usually small.
- BharatKosh
- The Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in. It is the only accepted channel for the Central Gazette fee, since direct bank transfers were discontinued.
- e-Gazette
- The portal at egazette.gov.in where published notifications are searched and downloaded. An electronic edition has been published since 2008 and the download is free.
- Registrar correction
- A correction to a birth or death record under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, made by the municipal body that issued the certificate. It is not a gazette matter.
Update your records in this order
Doing this in the wrong order is what turns a four week job into a four month one.
| Order | Record | Why it comes here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aadhaar | Almost every other service verifies against Aadhaar. Update it first at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with the gazette, affidavit and newspaper pages. |
| 2 | PAN card | The PAN correction form asks for proof, and an updated Aadhaar makes this straightforward. |
| 3 | Bank accounts | Banks check the PAN and Aadhaar pair. Updating the bank before both are done causes a mismatch. |
| 4 | Passport | Re-issue with the change recorded. The gazette is the accepted proof, and Passport Seva also checks the newspaper notice in many cases. |
| 5 | Voter ID and driving licence | Straightforward once Aadhaar carries the new detail. |
| 6 | EPFO, UAN and insurance | Employer-linked records. Your HR department usually needs the gazette on file first. |
| 7 | School, board and university records | Slowest of the lot. Each board has its own correction form and its own fee. |
| 8 | Property, GST and business records | Handle last, once the identity documents all agree with each other. |
Lost your gazette, or it printed wrong?
Two very different problems, with two very different answers.
You lost the copy
Good news: nothing is lost. The Gazette of India is a permanent public record, and the PDF can be downloaded again from egazette.gov.in at any time, free of cost. You need the publication date and ideally the part and page number, which is why we tell every client to note those down.
If you have no idea of the date, searching gets harder but is usually still possible from your name and an approximate year. We do this retrieval for clients who published years ago through somebody else and have nothing left in hand. Nobody should charge you a large amount for a free download, so ask what you are paying for before you agree.
It printed with a mistake
A correction notification has to be published, and the fee is payable again, because the original fee is non-refundable. There is no way to edit a printed gazette entry; the record is corrected by adding to it, not by changing it.
If the error came from the gazette office rather than from your own submitted file, raise it with the Department of Publication with your acknowledgement and your submitted form attached. Where the error came from your file, the honest answer is that you pay again. This is the whole reason we insist on written confirmation of spelling before anything prints.
What a gazette cannot do
Half the people who call us have been sold the wrong service by somebody else. These are the jobs a gazette does not fix.
| What you want | Is it a gazette? | Where it actually goes |
|---|---|---|
| Fix a spelling in a birth certificate | No | Registrar correction under Section 15 of the RBD Act, 1969, at the municipal body that issued it. |
| Fix a name on a board mark sheet | No | That education board's own correction process. The gazette supports the application, the board still runs its procedure. |
| Change a company or LLP name | No | The Ministry of Corporate Affairs. Company name changes do not use the personal gazette route. |
| Change a trademark or brand name | No | The Trade Marks Registry, through the appropriate form. |
| Change your address | No | Update each record directly. There is no gazette for an address change. |
| Get a caste or income certificate | No | Your state revenue department or tehsil office. |
| Become a gazetted officer | No | Unrelated. A gazetted officer is an officer whose appointment is notified by the Government. It has nothing to do with publishing a personal notice. |
| Change your name, religion or gender on record | Yes | Part IV of the Gazette of India, or your State Gazette. |
A birth certificate mistake is not a gazette job
This is the single most common thing people are sold wrongly. If your birth certificate has a spelling mistake, a wrong parent's name or a wrong date, that is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. You apply to the registrar or municipal body that issued the certificate, which means your Municipal Corporation, Nagar Palika, Nagar Panchayat or Gram Panchayat depending on where you were born.
A gazette notification will not fix the entry in the birth register. The two documents live in different systems. Where a case genuinely needs both, which happens when you want a new name going forward and a corrected record going backward, we tell you that clearly and quote both separately.
Religion, gender, marriage and adoption
Religion change
A change of religion is declared and published so that record-keeping and personal law follow the change. A declaration is prepared alongside the affidavit, and where a formal conversion certificate exists it is attached. We handle these without comment or questions beyond what the file needs.
Gender change notification
The Department of Publication publishes its own guidelines covering change of name and gender in a public notice, and the document set differs from a plain name change. We prepare the file to the current guideline and tell you exactly what is required before you spend anything. Handled with discretion.
Surname after marriage or divorce
The marriage certificate does not change your name by itself, and neither does a decree of divorce. Both are supporting proof attached to the same three-step process. Many women choose the Central route because a passport re-issue is usually next on the list.
Adoption and guardianship
Where a child's name changes after adoption, the adoption deed or court order goes into the file alongside the birth certificate. Where only one parent or a guardian signs, a custody or guardianship order is required, and we will tell you upfront if your case needs one.
If you are a Government employee
Your process has an extra layer. Central Government employees follow the route set out in the Ministry of Home Affairs Office Memorandum No. 190016/1/87-Estt.(A) dated 12 March 1987, which requires a deed of change of name, publication, and an application through your own department so that the service book is updated. State Government employees usually route the change through the State Gazette and their own establishment section.
Do one thing before you spend any money: ask your establishment or administration section which gazette they will accept on the service record. Departments differ, and a gazette in the wrong series means paying twice. We prepare the file to match whatever your department confirms.
Armed forces, police and railway personnel usually have a service-specific procedure that sits alongside the gazette. Bring us the circular your unit gives you and we will build the file around it.
Why gazette applications get rejected
Every one of these is avoidable, and every one of them costs the fee again.
Document problems
- Spelling differs between the affidavit, the newspaper and the form
- A newspaper cutting sent instead of the complete original page
- Only one newspaper, or two papers in the same language
- ID proof that is blurred, cropped or photographed at an angle
- Witness ID missing or not self-attested
- Supporting proof missing for the type, such as no marriage certificate on a surname change
Process problems
- Filing the wrong type, most often a gazette where a Registrar correction was needed
- Stopping at the affidavit and assuming the change is done
- Paying outside BharatKosh, since direct transfers were discontinued
- Sending originals to an address copied from an unofficial website
- Choosing a State Gazette when a passport application is coming next
- Only one parent signing for a minor without a custody order
Should you do it yourself or use a service?
We will say it plainly: some people should do this themselves.
| Point of comparison | Doing it yourself | Using Documentadvisor |
|---|---|---|
| Money out | Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000 if nothing goes wrong | Government fee plus a quoted service charge |
| Your time | Several days across notary, two newspaper offices and the gazette counter | About 30 minutes of sending scans and confirming spelling |
| Travel | Depends on your city, and Delhi if you file the Central route in person | None |
| Choosing the right type | On you. Filing the wrong type is the costliest error there is. | We confirm the type before anything is drafted |
| Risk of paying twice | Real, because the fee is non-refundable and small errors are common | We check spelling with you in writing before anything prints |
| Best if | You live in Delhi, have time, and your case is a plain adult name change | You are outside Delhi, working, or your case is any type other than a plain name change |
If you live in Delhi, you are patient, and your case is a plain adult name change with no marriage, divorce, minor, religion, gender or service record angle, you can genuinely do this yourself. Read this page, follow the order, and you will be fine. If any part of that sentence is not true for you, a service saves you more than it costs.
Your Trust and Security First
A gazette means handing your identity documents to someone you have never met. We take that seriously, and we would rather be slow and correct than fast and wrong.
We confirm your type first
Before a single rupee is spent we tell you which of the nine types your case is, or whether it is not a gazette matter at all. Filing the wrong type is the costliest mistake in this process.
Your documents stay private
Your scans go to one advisor and one file. We do not resell your details, we do not add you to a marketing list, and we do not share your papers with anyone outside your case.
Nothing prints without your written yes
We send you the exact wording, letter by letter, and wait for your confirmation before the affidavit is typed or the notice is booked. The gazette fee is non-refundable, so this step protects your money.
Government fee shown separately
Our charge and the Government fee are always quoted as two lines. You can see exactly how much reaches the Government and how much is for our work, before you pay anything.
We tell you when you do not need us
If your case is a Registrar correction, a board correction or a Ministry of Corporate Affairs filing, we say so and point you to the right office. We would rather lose the job than sell you the wrong one.
Your originals come back to you
Original newspaper pages and the notarised affidavit are returned once the file is accepted, and we keep a scanned set so a lost document years later is not a fresh problem.
Everything You Need, In One Place
One place for the paperwork people find hardest: gazette notifications, affidavits, newspaper advertisements, rental agreements and property papers. Drafted, checked and filed by a team that does it every day.

The questions Google gets asked most
What is a gazette notification used for?
It is the official record of a personal change. Aadhaar, PAN, the passport office, banks, schools and employers accept it as proof that the change is real and dated. Without it, an affidavit is just your own statement about yourself.
Which Part of the Gazette of India is a name change published in?
Part IV, which carries advertisements and notices from private individuals and private bodies. Parts I, II and III carry Government and statutory notifications and are not open to personal notices.
Is a State Gazette as good as the Central Gazette?
Legally both are valid. Practically the Central Gazette is accepted everywhere in India and by foreign missions, while a State Gazette is reliable mainly within that state. If a passport or a central Government job is in your future, take the Central route.
Can I check my gazette online before I get the copy?
Yes. Published notifications are searchable and downloadable free from egazette.gov.in. Once your notification is printed you can find it there yourself, without paying anybody for the download.
What is the difference between an ordinary and an extraordinary gazette?
The ordinary edition is published weekly on a fixed day and carries routine notifications, including personal Part IV notices. The extraordinary edition can be published on any day when something is urgent. Personal notices use the ordinary weekly edition.
Do I need a gazette to change my name on a passport?
Yes, for a change of name the passport office asks for the gazette notification. A marriage certificate on its own does not carry it, and the passport office also commonly asks to see the newspaper notices.
Can NRIs and OCI holders file a gazette in India?
Yes. The Central Gazette accepts applications from abroad at a higher fee, commonly around Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,000. Documents are usually attested at the Indian mission or handled through a representative in India holding an authorisation from you.
Is a gazetted officer the same as a gazette notification?
No, and this confuses a lot of people. A gazetted officer is a Government officer whose appointment is notified in the Gazette. A gazette notification for a name or a date is a private notice you publish about yourself. The two have nothing to do with each other.

The short version
Everything on this page in ten lines
- A gazette service files your notification in the Gazette of India or a State Gazette, and personal notices publish in Part IV.
- Parts I, II and III carry Government and statutory notifications. Part IV is the only one open to private individuals.
- Nine types are handled: name, surname after marriage, minor, spelling, parent name, date of birth, religion, gender, and corrections to a published gazette.
- All nine follow the same three steps: affidavit, newspaper notices in two languages, gazette filing.
- The Central Gazette fee is commonly Rs 1,100 adult and Rs 1,700 minor, paid on BharatKosh, and it is revised each financial year.
- Publication commonly takes 30 to 45 days, so plan for 3 to 7 weeks end to end.
- There is one Central Gazette office, in Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Any other city with that pin code is a fake address.
- The fee is non-refundable, so an error means paying in full again for a correction notification.
- A birth certificate mistake, a board mark sheet and a company name are not gazette work.
- After publication, update Aadhaar first, then PAN, then bank, then passport, then everything else.
