Name Change Procedure in Telangana
Telangana is one of the few states where a private citizen has a real online gazette route, and a Central Gazette route as well. This page explains both, in plain words, for Hyderabad, Warangal, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Khammam and all 33 districts. The affidavit, the newspaper notices, the fees, honest timelines, and which route actually fits your case. We prepare the whole file and track it until your notification is live.

Everything shown in the videos is written out in full below, with the routes, the fees, the office addresses and the Government sources it is all checked against.
Telangana residents have two routes. The state route is a notarised affidavit, newspaper publication, then an online application on the TG e-Gazette portal at tggazette.cgg.gov.in, run by the Commissionerate of Printing at Chanchalguda, Hyderabad, and published in Part II of the Telangana Gazette. The central route is an affidavit, two newspaper notices and a file to the Gazette of India in Delhi, published in Part IV in 30 to 45 days and valid across India.
Most name change pages copy one generic process onto every state, and the Telangana versions are worse than most. One well ranked page written for Telangana addresses residents of Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, which are Andhra Pradesh cities. Another demands a police verification certificate and a Tahsildar's Annexure II, neither of which any gazette office has ever asked for. The truth is more useful than any of it: the name change procedure in Telangana gives you two genuinely working routes, and picking the right one is most of the job.
A Gazette notification is a formal announcement of your name change printed in the official journal of a Government. Once it carries a date and a number, it becomes the document that Aadhaar, PAN, banks, boards, the passport office and employers accept as the legal record of your new name. An affidavit on its own is the beginning of the change, not the end of it. What Telangana adds is a choice about which official journal carries it.

Key takeaways
- Telangana is one of the few states with a genuine online route for individuals: the TG e-Gazette portal at tggazette.cgg.gov.in, which carries a prescribed Change of Name application form and is run by the Commissionerate of Printing, Stationery and Stores Purchase at Chanchalguda, Hyderabad.
- Personal notices on the state route publish in Part II of the Telangana Gazette, printed at the Government Central Press, Chanchalguda. Confirm the current state charges on the portal itself before paying anyone, including us.
- The Central Gazette fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for adults and Rs 1,700 for minors, paid only through bharatkosh.gov.in, and the Department of Publication revises it each financial year.
- There is exactly one Central Gazette office: Department of Publication, Civil Lines, behind Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054. Any page showing that pin code beside a Hyderabad address has copied it.
- No police verification and no Tahsildar certificate are part of a gazette name change on either route. Checklists demanding them have imported steps from unrelated procedures.
- The Telangana Gazette runs a weekly cycle, with notifications received up to Wednesday going into that week's issue, and urgent matters issued as extraordinary gazettes.
- Since October 2015 the Gazette of India has been digital only, downloaded free from egazette.gov.in. Nobody couriers a paper original.
- A birth certificate mistake is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, through the GHMC, your municipality or the gram panchayat. It is not a gazette matter.
India's youngest state was born through a gazette notification
Telangana understands better than most places that a name becomes real only when it is published.
After one of the longest statehood movements in the country, Parliament passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. The Act itself did not fix the date. Section 2 left the appointed day to be set by the Central Government through a notification in the Official Gazette, and that notification named 2 June 2014. On that day Telangana became India's 29th state, and the date is marked every year as Formation Day.
The same Act set out how much would be shared and for how long. Section 5 made Hyderabad the common capital of both states for a period not exceeding ten years, after which it became Telangana's alone. Section 3 listed ten districts as the new state, and reorganisation since then has taken that to 33. Every one of those changes, the state itself, the capital arrangement and each new district, took effect through a gazette notification.
Your name change follows exactly the same logic. The affidavit and the newspaper advertisement are steps along the way, but the change becomes real on the day it appears in a gazette. In Telangana you get to choose which gazette that is, and this page is about making that choice properly.
TG e-Gazette or Central Gazette of India?
Both are real. The state route is faster and local. The central route works everywhere. Which one you need depends on where your records live.
Most states have no practical gazette route for private citizens. Their state press prints laws and Government orders, and an individual who sends an affidavit there gets nothing back. Telangana is different. The TG e-Gazette portal carries a prescribed Change of Name application, and real name change notices, from spelling corrections in school records to married names and alias declarations, publish in the Telangana Gazette every week.
The portal is run by the Commissionerate of Printing, Stationery and Stores Purchase. Gazette issues themselves carry the line that they are printed and published by the Commissioner of Printing, Government of Telangana, at the Government Central Press, Chanchalguda, Hyderabad. That is the office behind the state route, and it is a real address in Hyderabad, not a copied one.

Watch: where the gazette office in Telangana actually is
The question people in this state search for most, answered before you send a file anywhere. Telangana is one of the few states where the answer is a real local address rather than a redirection to Delhi.
Gazette Office in Telangana, and the address of the gazette office in Telangana
The TG e-Gazette route, step by step
Four stages. This is the route most Telangana residents should look at first, because it is online, local and quick.
The affidavit
An affidavit on stamp paper stating your old name, your new name, your father's or husband's name, your full address in Telangana and the reason for the change, signed before a notary. Stamp paper and notary together usually cost Rs 100 to Rs 500.
The newspaper notice
The change published in papers that circulate where you live, with one Telugu daily and one English daily as the standard pair. Keep the complete original printed pages, not cuttings.
The online application
The prescribed Change of Name form on tggazette.cgg.gov.in, with the affidavit, newspaper proof, identity proof and photographs attached as the form directs, and the charges paid on the portal.
Step 1: prepare and notarise the affidavit
The affidavit is short, but every later document copies from it. It carries your old name, your new name, your father's or husband's name, your full address and the reason for the change, and it is sworn before a notary. If the new name is spelt one way in the affidavit and another way in the newspaper, the application comes back.
Tell the drafter early if any of your records carry an alias, for example one spelling in a school record and a different one everywhere since. The Telangana Gazette publishes alias declarations, which tie two spellings to one person, and that solves a mismatch at the root instead of one certificate at a time. Deciding this before the affidavit is typed is far cheaper than discovering it after publication.
Step 2: publish the newspaper advertisement
Publish in newspapers that genuinely circulate where you live. One Telugu daily and one English daily is the standard combination across the state. In the Old City of Hyderabad an Urdu daily is often used alongside the English one, which fits a state where Urdu is the second official language.
The advertisement should carry your old name, your new name, your full address, your age, your father's or husband's name, the date the affidavit was sworn and the name of the notary who attested it. Read every line before it prints, letter by letter, including the spelling variant you have chosen. Keep the complete original printed pages. Two notices together usually cost Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 depending on the paper and the edition.
Step 3: apply on tggazette.cgg.gov.in
Fill the prescribed Change of Name application on the TG e-Gazette portal. Upload or submit the affidavit, the newspaper proof, identity proof and photographs exactly as the form directs, and pay the charges shown on the portal.
The portal lists its own current charges, and they can change. Confirm the amount on the portal itself before paying, rather than trusting a number on any private website, including this one. We deliberately do not print a state fee here, because a figure we cannot verify against a Government page is worse than no figure at all.
Step 4: publication in Part II of the Telangana Gazette
Your notice publishes in Part II of the Telangana Gazette, printed at the Government Central Press, Chanchalguda. The gazette runs on a weekly cycle: notifications received up to Wednesday go into that week's issue, and urgent Government matters are issued as extraordinary gazettes rather than waiting for the weekly one. Once it is out, you can find your notification in the e-Gazette archive on the portal and download it.
The Central Gazette route, step by step
Slower, and it involves posting a file to Delhi, but the resulting notification is accepted everywhere in India and by foreign missions.
Step 1: the affidavit and two newspaper notices
The same affidavit works, followed by the notice in two daily newspapers, one Telugu and one English, with identical wording in both. Keep the complete original printed pages including the masthead and the date, because the Department of Publication checks them. A cutting is not accepted. Two notices usually cost Rs 800 to Rs 4,000.
Step 2: prepare the file for Delhi
Your file for the Department of Publication should contain:
- The complete original newspaper pages carrying your notices
- A signed undertaking that the facts stated are true
- Two copies of the prescribed proforma, signed by you and attested
- A soft copy of the notice text, in the form the Department currently asks for
- Self-attested photo identity of the applicant and of one witness
- Two passport size photographs
- A request letter addressed to the Controller of Publications
Keep every supporting paper recent. The Department expects documents that are not older than one year, so an affidavit or newspaper page left over from an earlier attempt will sink the file.
Step 3: pay on BharatKosh and send the file
The central fee is paid only through bharatkosh.gov.in, the Government's Non-Tax Receipt Portal. It is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, with an extra amount for each alias if you publish alias names. The Department of Publication revises these amounts each financial year, so confirm the current figure on deptpub.gov.in before you pay. The fee is not refundable.
Do not send a demand draft. Older Telangana pages still tell you to draw a draft of Rs 1,100 in favour of a Controller of Publications in Telangana. That instruction is wrong twice over: the demand draft route closed years ago, and there is no Controller of Publications in Telangana to draw one in favour of. Send the completed file by post or courier to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, or hand it in there.
Applications are accepted from the applicant directly rather than from agents. That is exactly why an honest service prepares, checks and tracks your file, which you then sign and send, instead of claiming to submit it on your behalf.
Step 4: download from egazette.gov.in
Your notification appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India, in weekly Saturday dated issues, about 30 to 45 days after the file reaches Delhi. Since October 2015 the Gazette has been digital only, so you download the PDF free from egazette.gov.in and it needs no further certification. Any package promising a physical Gazette copy by courier is promising a document that stopped existing in 2015.
Which route should you choose in Telangana?
The honest answer depends on one question: where does the new name have to be accepted?
Choose the TG e-Gazette when
- Your records mostly sit inside Telangana: school, college, land, local employment
- You want a process that is online, local and quick
- You are fixing an alias or a spelling that appears in a state issued record
- You are comfortable that offices outside the state may ask for the central notification instead
Choose the Central Gazette when
- You need a passport, or you already hold one in the old name
- Central boards, banks in other states or a central Government employer are involved
- You live or work outside Telangana, including in the Gulf
- You want one notification that no office anywhere in India can question
There is also a belt and braces option, and it is not a sales trick. Applicants making a major surname change shortly before a passport application sometimes take the state notification first, because it is quick, and then file the central one for nationwide records. It costs more, and for most people it is unnecessary, so ask us before you decide to do both.
Working in the Gulf or elsewhere abroad, the Central Gazette is the safer anchor. Execute the deed of change of name where you are, have it attested by the Indian Embassy or Consulate, and budget around Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,000 for the complete exercise.
Documents required for a name change in Telangana
Send clear, flat scans. Photographs of documents taken at an angle are the second most common reason for delay.
For an adult applicant
- Notarised name change affidavit, hard copy
- Aadhaar or other Government photo identity in the old name, self-attested
- Address proof in Telangana: electricity bill, water bill or rent agreement
- Complete original newspaper pages of the notices
- The prescribed application: the TG e-Gazette form online, or two copies of the central proforma with a soft copy of the notice text
- Two passport size photographs
- Self-attested photo identity of one witness, for the central route
- Marriage certificate, if the change follows marriage
- Divorce decree, if you are returning to a maiden name
Extra papers for particular cases
- Birth certificate of the child, where the applicant is a minor
- Photo identity and address proof of both parents or the legal guardian
- Guardianship or custody order, where only one parent applies
- Deed attested by the Indian Embassy or Consulate, if you apply from abroad
- Departmental deed, if you are a Central Government employee
- SSC, Intermediate or degree certificates, where a school or board record has to follow the change
- Every document showing a different spelling, where you are fixing an alias or transliteration mismatch
Why people change their name in Telangana
Every one of these is a normal, accepted reason. You do not need an unusual story to apply.
Errors on record
A mistake in a birth certificate, an SSC record or a college certificate, or a spelling that drifted across documents over the years.
Telugu, Urdu and English spellings
The same name written differently across scripts. Laxmi and Lakshmi, Mohd and Mohammed. The most common name problem in this state.
Marriage and divorce
Taking a husband's surname after marriage, or returning to a maiden name after a divorce.
Adding or dropping an initial
Very common in this region, where a single initial in a school record stands for a full surname or a village name elsewhere.
Adoption
Recording a child's name after an adoption, so the school and identity records agree.
Numerology or astrology
A widely used reason in India, and the gazette route treats it like any other stated reason.
Change of religion
Adopting a name that matches a change of faith, recorded properly so identity documents follow.
Gender change
Handled quietly and without a lecture, with the document set that fits your case.
You simply want a different name
A perfectly valid reason. The affidavit states it, and the process is the same.
Who can apply
- Any Indian citizen, at any stage of life
- A husband or a wife, independently of each other
- A parent or legal guardian, on behalf of a child under 18
- A Telangana resident working in another state, through the central route
- An applicant living abroad, through an attested deed
What you need to qualify
- Indian citizenship
- A valid Government photo identity document
- A stated reason for the change, written into the affidavit
- For a minor, a parent or guardian who signs and takes responsibility
What you can change is equally broad: the full name, the spelling of an existing name, or just the surname. The affidavit states exactly what the old full name was and exactly what the new full name will be, so a partial change is handled the same way as a complete one.
Name change fees in Telangana: what it really costs
Short answer: the central Government fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, the state charges are listed on the portal, and a realistic self-done total is Rs 2,000 to Rs 6,000.
| Item | Typical amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stamp paper and notary | Rs 100 to Rs 500 | Local notary in any district. |
| Newspaper notices | Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 | The widest variable. Telugu plus English, and it depends on the paper and the edition. |
| TG e-Gazette charges | As listed on the portal | Confirm on tggazette.cgg.gov.in before paying. We do not print a state figure we cannot verify against a Government page. |
| Central Gazette fee, adult | Commonly Rs 1,100 | Paid through BharatKosh. The Department of Publication revises it each financial year, so confirm on the day you file. |
| Central Gazette fee, minor | Commonly Rs 1,700 | Applies to anyone under 18. Also paid through BharatKosh. |
| Extra alias names | Charged per alias | Applies only if you publish alias names alongside the main change. |
| Applying from abroad | Around Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,000 | Plus embassy or consulate attestation of the deed. |
| Physical Gazette copy | Does not exist | The Gazette of India has been digital only from October 2015. Nobody can post you an original. |
| Realistic self-done total | Rs 2,000 to Rs 6,000 | Depends on the route and the newspapers chosen, excluding travel and repeat attempts. |
| Documentadvisor assistance | Quoted per case | Charged separately from Government fees. Call 9540005002 for a fixed quote before you commit. |
Neither fee is refundable. If a notification prints with an error that came from your own file, you pay again for a correction notice. That is exactly why we confirm the spelling in writing and refuse to rush a file with an unresolved question in it.
How long the name change takes in Telangana, honestly
Short answer: the state route usually finishes within a few weeks, the central route takes 3 to 7 weeks, and neither has a paid fast track.
Day 1 to 3
Documents collected, route decided, affidavit drafted, spelling confirmed with you in writing, notarisation arranged with a local notary.
Day 3 to 7
Notices booked in a Telugu daily and an English daily that circulate in your district, with an Urdu daily where the case calls for it. Complete original pages collected.
State route
Online application filed on the TG e-Gazette portal. Notifications received up to Wednesday go into that week's gazette, so complete applications typically finish within a few weeks.
Central route
File assembled and dispatched in 2 to 4 days, then 30 to 45 days to publication in Part IV. We download the PDF and send it with the update checklist.
End to end, plan for a few weeks on the state route and 3 to 7 weeks on the central route. Both publish in cycles rather than on a date you can pick.
Areas we serve across Telangana
Both routes run online or by post, so your district does not limit you. We support applicants across all 33 districts.

Key terms explained
The words that appear on every name change website, in language people actually use.
- Gazette notification
- A formal announcement printed in the official journal of a Government. For a name change it is the document that Aadhaar, PAN, passport offices, banks, boards and employers accept as legal proof.
- TG e-Gazette
- Telangana's online gazette system at tggazette.cgg.gov.in, run by the Commissionerate of Printing, Stationery and Stores Purchase at Chanchalguda, Hyderabad. It carries a prescribed Change of Name application for individuals.
- Part II
- The section of the Telangana Gazette in which personal notices, including name changes and alias declarations, are published. It is a state numbering and has nothing to do with Part IV of the Gazette of India.
- Central Gazette
- The Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication in Civil Lines, Delhi. It is accepted everywhere in India and by foreign missions.
- Part IV
- The section of the Gazette of India that carries notices from people rather than from the Government. Personal name change notifications appear here. Part IV belongs to the Central Gazette only.
- Extraordinary gazette
- An issue published immediately instead of waiting for the weekly cycle, used for urgent matters. The Telangana Gazette issues these alongside its weekly numbers.
- Alias declaration
- A published statement that two names or spellings belong to the same person. It is the cleanest fix where one spelling sits in an old school record and another sits in every document since.
- Transliteration
- Writing a name from one script in another, such as a Telugu or Urdu name written in English. Different transliterations of the same name are treated as different names by Government systems.
- Affidavit
- A written statement you swear is true, signed before a notary public. For a name change it records your old name, your new name, your address and the reason for the change.
- BharatKosh
- The Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in. It is the only accepted channel for the Central Gazette fee, because demand drafts and direct bank transfers were discontinued.
- e-Gazette
- The portal at egazette.gov.in where published Central notifications are searched and downloaded. It is a download portal only, and the PDF you download is the official copy.
- Registrar correction
- A correction to a birth or death record under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, made by the body that issued the certificate. It is not a gazette matter.
After the gazette: update your records in this order
The gazette is the middle of the journey, not the end. Doing this in the wrong order turns a four week job into a four month one.
| Order | Record | Why it comes here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aadhaar | Almost every other service verifies against Aadhaar. Update it first at an enrolment centre with the notification, the affidavit and your identity document. |
| 2 | PAN card | The correction form asks for proof, and an updated Aadhaar makes this straightforward. |
| 3 | Bank accounts | Banks check the PAN and Aadhaar pair. Updating the bank before both agree creates a mismatch. |
| 4 | Passport | Re-issue with a change of name. This is the record that usually needs the Central Gazette rather than the state one. |
| 5 | Voter ID and driving licence | Straightforward once Aadhaar carries the new name. |
| 6 | EPFO or UAN and insurance | Employer-linked records. Your HR department usually needs the notification on file first. |
| 7 | School, board and university records | Slowest of the lot. Each board runs its own correction procedure and charges its own fee. |
| 8 | Property, GST and business records | Handle last, once the identity documents all agree with each other. |
Aadhaar rules are published on uidai.gov.in and passport re-issue rules on passportindia.gov.in. Both are listed in the sources at the foot of this page.
A birth certificate mistake is not a gazette matter
This is the single most common thing people in Telangana are sold wrongly. If the error sits in a birth certificate, a wrong spelling, a wrong parent's name or a missing child's name, the fix is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. You apply to the body that issued the certificate: the GHMC in Hyderabad, your municipal corporation or municipality elsewhere, or the gram panchayat.
A gazette notification will not change the entry in the birth register. The two documents live in different systems. The Civil Registration System portal is crsorgi.gov.in. Agents who push every birth certificate case into a gazette application are charging you for the wrong process. Where a case genuinely needs both, which happens when you want a new name going forward and a corrected record going backward, we say so and quote the two separately.
Special situations in Telangana
Five cases we see constantly here, starting with the two that general guides never mention.
Spelling and alias mismatches across Telugu, Urdu and English records
This is Telangana's most common real case. The same name gets written differently across scripts and across decades. Laxmi in one record and Lakshmi in another. Mohd here and Mohammed there. A school record carrying a spelling from a parent's generation that has never matched anything since. Each office treats the variants as different people, and you find out at the worst possible moment, usually during a passport application or a job verification.
The Telangana Gazette regularly publishes exactly these: corrections of wrong entries in school records, and alias declarations that tie two spellings to one person. A notification declaring one final name, with the alias recorded where a second spelling genuinely exists, is the cleanest fix available, because it gives every office a single published spelling to follow rather than a judgement call.
United Andhra Pradesh era documents
Anyone schooled or employed before 2 June 2014 holds documents issued by the united state of Andhra Pradesh: SSC and Intermediate records, degree certificates, old employment papers, land records. Those documents remain fully valid. The Reorganisation Act carried the laws in force forward into both successor states, with express powers to adapt and construe them, and no office treats a validly issued united Andhra Pradesh certificate as void.
What the split did leave behind is mismatch. Plenty of people have one spelling on an old Andhra Pradesh record and another on everything issued since 2014, or records held partly in one successor state and partly in the other. A gazette notification fixing one final name works across both, which is why this is a case worth handling properly rather than one certificate at a time.
Name change after marriage
A woman adding her husband's surname, or choosing to keep her maiden name and record it clearly, follows the same stages with the marriage certificate attached as supporting proof. After a divorce, attach the decree instead. The gazette route works in both directions, taking a married name or returning to a maiden name, and a marriage certificate on its own does not change your name in Government records.
Name change for a minor child
A parent or legal guardian applies on the child's behalf. The affidavit is sworn by the parent, the child's birth certificate is attached, and on the central route the minor fee applies, commonly Rs 1,700 with the same annual revision caveat. Both parents signing avoids objections later. Where only one parent signs, a custody or guardianship order is needed.
Working in the Gulf
Telangana sends more workers to the Gulf than almost any Indian state, and their records sit in two countries at once. The Central Gazette anchors these cases best, because Part IV is valid everywhere in India and recognised by embassies. Execute the deed abroad, have it attested by the Indian Embassy or Consulate, apply to Delhi, and budget around Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,000.
School and board record corrections
SSC, Intermediate and university records each follow the issuing body's own correction procedure. The gazette notification supports the application, and on the state route it has the advantage of being issued by the same Government as the certificate. The board still decides the outcome, and nobody should promise otherwise.
If you are a Government employee in Telangana
Your process has an extra layer. Central Government employees follow the route set out in the Ministry of Home Affairs Office Memorandum No. 190016/1/87-Estt.(A) dated 12 March 1987: a deed of change of name is executed and routed through the department, so the service book is updated alongside the gazette notification.
State Government employees should tell their own establishment section before spending anything, and ask one question: which notification they will accept on the service record, the state one or the central one. Departments differ, and a notification in the wrong series means paying twice.
Police, teaching and other service personnel often have a department circular that sits alongside the gazette. Send us that circular and we build the file around it.
What the law does not allow, and what you gain by doing it properly
You may take almost any name you like. Almost.
Names that will not be accepted
- A name taken in order to hide your identity
- A name taken to escape a debt, a liability or a legal proceeding
- A name that is obscene or offensive
- A name containing punctuation marks or symbols
- A name that impersonates another person for gain
A change of name does not erase anything behind you. Your old records stay linked to you through the notification itself, which names both the old and the new name. That is the point of publishing it.
What you gain by doing it legally
- Official recognition that every department works from, public or private
- A permanent published record that never expires and never needs renewal
- One spelling that Aadhaar, PAN, bank, board and passport records all follow
- Marriage, divorce and inheritance paperwork that matches your identity documents
- No lawyer and no court order needed, because this is an administrative process
Common mistakes that get Telangana applications rejected
Every one of these is avoidable, and every one of them costs the fee again.
Document problems
- Newspaper details do not match the affidavit, even by a single letter, initial or spelling variant
- Ignoring an alias that appears in an old school record, which leaves the mismatch alive after publication
- A newspaper cutting sent instead of the complete original printed page on the central route
- Only one newspaper, or two papers in the same language
- Newspapers that do not circulate in your district
- Supporting documents older than one year for the central file
Process problems
- Paying the central fee by demand draft or direct bank transfer instead of BharatKosh
- Collecting a police verification certificate or a Tahsildar's Annexure II that no gazette office asked for, and delaying the file for weeks to do it
- Sending the file to a gazette address in Hyderabad carrying the Delhi pin code 110054
- Choosing the state route when the whole point of the exercise is a passport
- Paying extra for a physical Gazette copy, which has not existed since October 2015
- Updating the bank before Aadhaar and PAN agree with each other
Doing it yourself or taking professional help
We will say it plainly: some people should do this themselves, and in Telangana more than in most states.
| Point of comparison | Doing it yourself | Using Documentadvisor |
|---|---|---|
| Money out | Rs 2,000 to Rs 6,000 if nothing goes wrong | Government fee plus a quoted service charge |
| Your time | Several days across the notary, the newspaper offices and either the portal or the dispatch to Delhi | About 30 minutes of sending scans and confirming spelling |
| Travel | Local trips, and Delhi if you choose to file the central route in person | None |
| Risk of paying twice | Real, because fees are not refundable and spelling variants are easy to get wrong | We check the spelling with you in writing before anything prints |
| Best if | Your case is a plain adult name change and all your records sit in Telangana | The case involves an alias, united Andhra Pradesh records, a passport, a minor, a board record or work abroad |
Both routes are doable on your own, and the TG e-Gazette portal makes the state route friendlier than almost anywhere else in India. The risk is in the details: matching wording everywhere, handling an alias correctly, the right payment channel, and choosing the route that actually fits where your records live. One mismatch and the file comes back after weeks with the fee gone. You can compare the whole range of name change services we run before deciding. Because the Central Gazette accepts applications only from the applicant directly, an honest service prepares, checks and tracks your file, which you then sign and send. That is exactly how Documentadvisor works.
Your Trust and Security First
A name change means handing your identity documents to someone you have never met. We take that seriously, and we would rather be slow and correct than fast and wrong.
Your documents stay private
Your scans go to one advisor and one file. We do not resell your details, we do not add you to a marketing list, and we do not share your papers with anyone outside your case.
Nothing prints without your written yes
We send you the exact wording, letter by letter, and wait for your confirmation before the affidavit is typed or a notice is booked. Gazette fees are not refundable, so this step protects your money.
Government fee shown separately
Our charge and the Government fee are always quoted as two lines. You see exactly how much reaches the Government and how much is for our work, before you pay anything.
We do not sell what does not exist
No physical Gazette copy, because the Gazette of India has been digital only from October 2015. No expedited publication, because neither route offers one. No state fee quoted from memory, because the portal publishes its own charges.
One advisor, start to finish
The same person handles your file from the first scan to the published notification, on the same number you first called. You never repeat your case to somebody new.
Your originals come back to you
Original newspaper pages and the notarised affidavit are returned once the file is accepted, and we keep a scanned set so a lost document years later is not a fresh problem.
Everything You Need, In One Place
One place for the paperwork people find hardest: gazette notifications, affidavits, newspaper advertisements, rental agreements and property papers. Drafted, checked and filed by a team that does it every day.

The questions Google gets asked most about Telangana
How can I change my name legally in Telangana?
Use one of two routes. The state route is a notarised affidavit, newspaper publication, and an online application on the TG e-Gazette portal, published in Part II of the Telangana Gazette. The central route is an affidavit, two newspaper notices and a file to the Gazette of India in Delhi, published in Part IV in 30 to 45 days and valid everywhere.
What is the fee for a gazette name change in Telangana?
The TG e-Gazette charges are listed on tggazette.cgg.gov.in, so confirm them there before paying. The Central Gazette fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for adults and Rs 1,700 for minors, paid only on bharatkosh.gov.in and revised each financial year.
Can I change my name online in Telangana?
Yes, more than in most states. The state route runs online through the TG e-Gazette portal. On the central route the fee is paid online and the final notification is downloaded online, with only the signed file going to Delhi by post.
How many days does a gazette name change take?
The Telangana Gazette runs a weekly cycle, with notifications received up to Wednesday going into that week's issue, so complete state applications typically finish within a few weeks. The Central Gazette takes 30 to 45 days after your file reaches Delhi, so plan 3 to 7 weeks end to end on that route.
Is newspaper publication mandatory for a name change?
Yes on both routes. Publish in papers that circulate where you live, one Telugu and one English being the standard pair, and keep the complete original printed pages.
Is there a Central Gazette office in Hyderabad?
No. The state gazette is handled at Chanchalguda through the TG e-Gazette portal, which is a genuine Hyderabad office. There is no Central Gazette office in Hyderabad. The only one is the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.
Do I need police verification or a Tahsildar certificate?
No. Neither the TG e-Gazette nor the Central Gazette asks for either. Checklists demanding police verification or an Annexure II certificate have imported steps from unrelated procedures, and collecting them delays your file for nothing.
Is the Telangana Gazette valid outside the state?
It is a lawful state notification, so it is not worthless outside Telangana. What it is not is national. Offices in other states and foreign missions look for the Gazette of India, so if the new name has to work everywhere, use the central route or do both.
Does India use deed poll like the United Kingdom?
No. India does not use the deed poll system. The Indian equivalent is the affidavit, newspaper and gazette route explained on this page. A deed of change of name is used mainly for Government service records and for applicants abroad.
What does a name change agent in Hyderabad actually do?
The Central Gazette accepts applications only from applicants directly, so what you need is a service that prepares, checks and tracks your file, which you then sign and send. Anyone claiming they can submit it as your agent is describing something the Department does not do.
Do I need a lawyer or a court order?
No. A simple name change, including after marriage, is an administrative process. You need a notary for the affidavit, not a court. A lawyer becomes relevant only where there is a custody dispute or an existing court matter involving the name.
