How to Change Name Legally in Lucknow

Lucknow has a Government Press in the middle of the city, which is exactly why so many people here start in the wrong place. Search for guidance and you will find four different addresses for one office, a Prayagraj address labelled as Lucknow, and one page recommending a Government website that does not exist. This guide explains what the Minto Road press actually does, where your file really goes, and what it costs.

Name Change Procedure in Lucknow | How to Name Change in Lucknow

Quick answer

Make a notarised affidavit, publish the change in two newspapers, one Hindi and one English, then send the prescribed file to the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, behind Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, with the fee paid through BharatKosh. Your notification appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India in about 30 to 45 days, and you download it yourself from egazette.gov.in. The Government Press at Minto Road is a state printing establishment and is not where a personal name change file goes.

What does changing your name legally in Lucknow actually involve?

Three stages, in a fixed order. A notarised affidavit that sets the exact new name down. A newspaper advertisement in two dailies, one Hindi and one English, that puts it in public. And a gazette notification, which is the stage that makes it official.

A Gazette notification is a formal announcement of your name change printed in the official journal of a Government. Once it carries a date and an entry number, passport offices, UIDAI, banks, boards, PSUs, employers and foreign missions treat it as the legal record of your new name. An affidavit on its own is the beginning of the change, not the end of it, and no court order is involved at any point.

What is different about Lucknow is not the process. It is the confusion about where to go. This city has a visible, prominent Government printing establishment, so it seems obvious that is where a printed notice would be produced. It is not, and the search results make it worse rather than better. That is what the next two sections are for.

Key takeaways

  • The Government Press at Minto Road, near Hazratganj, is real and is a state printing establishment under the Directorate of Printing and Stationery, Uttar Pradesh, with a unit at Civil Lines, Prayagraj. It prints the state gazette. It is not a personal name change counter.
  • For a name change a passport office, a bank, UIDAI or a central employer will accept, the file goes to Delhi. There is no walk-in counter for that anywhere in Lucknow.
  • The Government fee is commonly Rs 1,100 adult, Rs 1,700 minor and Rs 3,500 for Indians abroad, paid only on bharatkosh.gov.in and revised each financial year. Demand drafts are not accepted, and none should be made payable to a Controller of Publications in Lucknow, because that officer is in Delhi.
  • Be careful with addresses you find online. One page gives a Prayagraj address labelled Lucknow. Another puts the office near the Central Bus Station. A third says Aishbagh. A fourth invents a Lucknow street with a Delhi pincode.
  • Lucknow pincodes run in the 226 series. Any Lucknow address quoting 110054 is a Delhi address with the city name swapped.
  • One widely read page recommends a Government website that does not exist, while telling readers not to use unverified sites. Type Government addresses yourself.
  • Hard copies ceased on 1 October 2015. You download the PDF free from egazette.gov.in, and the Department's own guidelines state it needs no further certification.
  • Applications are entertained from the applicant only, personally or by post or courier. Agents and advocates are named as impermissible channels.
  • A UP Board certificate correction is the Board's own process, not something the gazette performs. Do the gazette first, then apply to the Board with it attached.
  • A birth certificate mistake is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, through Lucknow Nagar Nigam or whichever body registered the birth.

What does the Minto Road Government Press actually do?

Let us be precise, because a dozen websites are imprecise about this and the building is real enough to be convincing.

The Government Press in Lucknow is the press of the Directorate of Printing and Stationery, Government of Uttar Pradesh, whose portal is dpsup.up.gov.in. The department also has a unit at Civil Lines, Prayagraj. Its work is printing for the state Government, including the Uttar Pradesh state gazette, which carries state laws, Government orders and departmental notifications.

What it is

A working Government printing establishment. It prints the state gazette and Government material for departments across Uttar Pradesh, and it has done so for a very long time.

What it is not

A public counter where an individual walks in with an affidavit and a newspaper page and gets a personal name change published. Uttar Pradesh does not run a citizen-facing personal name change service in the way Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, Rajasthan or West Bengal do.

How to change name legally in Lucknow: notarised affidavit, Hindi and English newspaper notices and the Part IV notification in the Gazette of India
What a Lucknow file is built from: the affidavit, the two newspaper notices and the Part IV notification.

Why this catches Lucknow residents specifically

In Kanpur or Gorakhpur nobody can see a Government Press, so nobody assumes there is one to visit. Here it is visible, central and genuinely a Government printing establishment, and a dozen websites tell you it is the gazette office for name changes. The building is real. The service you are looking for is not offered there.

Is there a gazette office in Lucknow?

Gazette Office in Lucknow लखनऊ में राजपत्र कार्यालय

So where does a Lucknow file go? To the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, behind Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, by post or courier. That is the office that publishes Part IV of the Gazette of India, which is what a passport office, a bank, UIDAI, a central Government employer or a university outside the state will accept.
And confirm before you travel anywhere. If you do need to deal with the state department for some other reason, go to dpsup.up.gov.in and use the contact details published there, rather than an address from a search result. That single habit removes the entire problem described in the next section.

Four addresses, one office: which is right?

If you have already spent an hour trying to pin down where to go, this is why.

Addresses given online for the gazette office in Lucknow, and what is actually going on
What a page tells youWhat is actually going on
Government Press, Minto Road, near Hazratganj, Lucknow 226001The address that recurs most coherently for the UP state press. But it is a state printing establishment, not a name change counter, so it does not answer the question people are asking
Near the Lucknow Central Bus Station, with Vidhan Sabha Marg nearbyAppears on the same page as the Minto Road address, describing a different location. Two locations, one page
Superintendent, Printing and Stationery, Prayagraj (Allahabad) 211001, Lucknow, IndiaA Prayagraj address with Lucknow appended. Prayagraj does have a unit of the department. It is not in Lucknow, and it is repeated four times on one page
Government Press, AishbaghA fourth locality for the same office, from a different publisher
Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Lucknow 110054Fabricated. 110054 is a Delhi pincode and Lucknow pincodes run in the 226 series. This is the Delhi address with the city name swapped, and a private mobile number is offered beside it
Use lucknow.gazette.gov.inThat domain does not exist. The page recommending it warns readers in the same breath not to use unverified sites
The last one is worth pausing on. A page telling you to use official websites that are checked, and then naming a Government address that was never registered, is not a typo. The same publisher runs city pages that invent Government presses by find and replace: a Mathura Government Press, a Jhansi Government Press, an eGazette Mathura, an eGazette Jhansi. None of those exist either.
Infographic: how to change name legally in Lucknow, showing what the Minto Road Government Press does, the six gazette office addresses in circulation and which are wrong, the three stages, the file contents and the real fees
The whole Lucknow picture on one page: which addresses are wrong, what the press actually does, and where the file really goes.

The safe habit

Type Government addresses yourself rather than clicking a search result. For the state department that is dpsup.up.gov.in. For downloading a published Central notification it is egazette.gov.in, and for the Department itself deptpub.gov.in. If a page offers a phone number next to what it calls a Government office, be sceptical: a Government office publishes its own numbers on its own site, and does not need a private mobile listed on a service page.

A city that has been printing names for over 165 years

There is a nice irony in Lucknow being a difficult city to get straight information about printed notices.

On 23 November 1858, a twenty-two-year-old named Munshi Nawal Kishore opened a small printing press in Lucknow, with official approval from Robert Montgomery, then Chief Commissioner of Oudh. Between 1865 and 1872 the Nawal Kishore Press grew into one of the most important publishing houses in India, printing in Urdu, Arabic, Persian and Hindi across religion, ethics, literature, medicine and history. Across its life it produced something like twelve thousand titles, five thousand of them in Nawal Kishore's own lifetime, and it shaped what a great many people in northern India read for two generations.

So Lucknow knows about print. It has a Government Press in the middle of town. And yet the one printed notice that changes a person's legal name is produced somewhere else entirely, in Delhi, and the confusion about that is worse here than in cities with no press at all. Familiarity is the problem: when there is a visible Government printing establishment down the road, it seems obvious that is where you go.

How do you change your name legally in Lucknow, step by step?

Five steps. The first is a decision rather than a form, and it is the one people rush.

1

Fix the exact name, then notarise the affidavit

Decide the exact spelling, spacing and initials before anything is drafted, because everything after this copies from it. Then have an affidavit drafted on stamp paper stating your old name, new name, father's or husband's name, full address in Lucknow and a clear reason, and sign it before a notary. Stamp paper and notary together usually cost Rs 100 to Rs 500, and notaries are available around the district court and across the city.

2

Publish in two newspapers

The same notice in two dailies that genuinely circulate in Lucknow, one Hindi and one English. Both are plentiful here, so compare quotes, because rates for the same few lines vary a good deal. The advertisement carries your old name, new name, full address, age, parentage and the affidavit date, worded exactly as the affidavit reads. Keep the complete original printed page of each, not a cutting, with the date clearly visible.

3

Prepare the file as the Department specifies

The notice for advertisement in Part IV showing parentage and residential address forwarded in original, a signed undertaking with old and new name declaring the facts are true, two copies of the prescribed proforma computer typed and attested with two witnesses' details, the print matter without the witness portion in MS Word as a soft copy, a certificate signed by you that hard copy and soft copy contents are the same, self-attested identity proof of applicant and witnesses, two photographs, the original newspaper pages, and a request letter to the Controller of Publications.

4

Pay through BharatKosh only

Pay only on bharatkosh.gov.in, commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, Rs 1,700 for a minor and Rs 3,500 for Indians abroad, with Rs 250 added in the specific case of adopting a name of another religion without changing religion. Revised each financial year, so confirm on deptpub.gov.in before paying. It is not refundable. Do not arrange a demand draft, and in particular do not make one payable to a Controller of Publications in Lucknow, because there is no such officer here.

5

Send the file, then download your notification

Send the complete file by post or courier to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, behind Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, or hand it in if you are travelling. Applications are entertained from the applicant directly, not from agents. Publication follows in Part IV in about 30 to 45 days.

6

What the guidelines say about the download

The Department is explicit. Physical printing and sale of hard copies ceased completely on 1 October 2015. So you go to egazette.gov.in, open the relevant issue, use Control and F to find your old or new name, and download the whole gazette to make your own copy. The guidelines state plainly that this needs no further certification from the Department.

How is the notification made, and how do you book the advertisement?

The whole process, start to finish

Check your documents side by side before step one. Put your UP Board certificate, Aadhaar, PAN and passport next to each other and see which version of your name appears most often, and which one you actually need to match. Ten minutes now saves a second gazette later, and the fee is not refundable.
Keep every document under a year old, and send nothing you will need again. The Department expects supporting documents that are not older than one year, and documents once submitted are not returned. That catches people who post an original certificate and then need it for an examination form six weeks later.

What documents are required for a name change in Lucknow?

The core file

  • Notarised name change affidavit
  • Aadhaar card or other Government photo identity showing the old name, self-attested
  • Address proof in Lucknow
  • Complete original newspaper pages of both advertisements, dates visible
  • Prescribed proforma in two copies, computer typed, with two witnesses' details and their identity proofs
  • Two passport size photographs
  • Soft copy of the print matter in MS Word, without the witness portion
  • Certificate signed by you that hard copy and soft copy contents are the same
  • Request letter addressed to the Controller of Publications

Depending on your case

  • Marriage certificate, if the change follows a marriage
  • Divorce decree, if the change follows a divorce
  • Birth certificate of the child, if the applicant is a minor
  • Deed attested by the Indian Embassy or Consulate, if applying from abroad
  • Departmental deed, if you are a Central Government employee, under MHA O.M. No. 190016/1/87-Estt.(A) dated 12 March 1987

What you do not need

  • A court order, or a deed poll, which is British procedure India does not use
  • A demand draft, and certainly not one payable in Lucknow
  • A compact disc, which older checklists still list. The soft copy is a Word file
  • A police clearance or no-pending-case certificate

What exactly goes into the file?

The same checklist, explained twice: once in English and once in Hindi, because this is the stage where a missing certificate or a wrongly typed proforma sends the whole file back.

What does a name change cost in Lucknow?

Government charges and service charges are two different things, and you are entitled to see them separated.

Typical costs of a name change for a Lucknow applicant, Government charges and other expenses
ExpenseTypical amountNotes
Stamp paper and notaryRs 100 to Rs 500Notaries around the district court and across the city
Two newspaper advertisementsRs 800 to Rs 4,000Plenty of Hindi and English options here, so compare quotes
Central Gazette, adultCommonly Rs 1,100BharatKosh only, revised each financial year, not refundable
Central Gazette, minorCommonly Rs 1,700BharatKosh only
Central Gazette, Indians abroadCommonly Rs 3,500 adult, Rs 5,100 minorEmbassy attestation and courier are separate and vary considerably
Religion case surchargeRs 250 added, making Rs 1,350Only where an adult adopts a name of another religion without changing religion, with an undertaking
Speed post to DelhiRs 50 to Rs 200The only distance cost in the whole process
Realistic self-done totalRs 2,000 to Rs 6,000All stages included
Fees are revised each financial year. The Department of Publication changes its printing charges from time to time, so treat every figure here as commonly applicable rather than fixed, and confirm the current amount on deptpub.gov.in before you pay.

Two figures circulating for Lucknow that deserve a note

One page quotes a total of about Rs 1,470, which does not match the published fee heads at all, and comes from the same page that invents a Government website. Another advertises packages from Rs 999, which cannot include the Government fee, since that alone is commonly Rs 1,100.

Three questions settle any Lucknow quote. Is the Government fee included in that number or on top of it? What happens if the file is returned? And where exactly is the file submitted? If the answer to the third is anywhere in Lucknow, stop there.

How long does a name change take in Lucknow?

Affidavit and notary

Usually the same day, once you have decided the exact spelling.

Newspaper publication

2 to 7 days, depending on the booking schedule you are given.

File and speed post

2 to 4 days to build the file properly and get it to Delhi.

Publication in Part IV

30 to 45 days after the file reaches Delhi.

Plan for 3 to 7 weeks end to end. If a passport appointment, an examination form or a joining date depends on this, start early and count backwards from the deadline, because the newspaper stage and the publication stage cannot be compressed.

There is no expedited option. Treat any promise of faster Government processing for a higher fee as a claim about that company's own turnaround on your paperwork, not about the Department's schedule.

Which parts of Lucknow do we cover?

The whole city and district. The process is the same everywhere, because the file goes to Delhi by post from wherever you live.

What do the name change terms actually mean?

The words that appear on every name change website, in language people actually use.

Gazette notification
A formal announcement printed in the official journal of a Government. For a name change it is what Aadhaar, PAN, passport offices, banks, boards, PSUs and employers accept as legal proof. It is not a court order and needs no lawyer.
Gazette of India
The Central Government's official journal, published by the Department of Publication. A notification here is valid in every state and is what foreign missions and central employers look for.
Part IV
The section of the Gazette of India carrying notices from private people rather than from Government. Part IV belongs to the Central Gazette only; a state gazette has its own parts and its own numbering.
Department of Publication
The Central Gazette office, at Civil Lines, behind Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, a subordinate office of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. There is exactly one, and it is not in Lucknow.
Controller of Publications
The officer heading that Department, to whom your request letter is addressed. This officer sits in Delhi, so a demand draft payable to a Controller of Publications in Lucknow is payable to nobody.
Directorate of Printing and Stationery
The Uttar Pradesh department that runs the Government Press in Lucknow and prints the state gazette. Its portal is dpsup.up.gov.in. It is not where a personal name change file goes.
State gazette
A state Government's own official journal. Uttar Pradesh has one, carrying state laws, Government orders and departmental notifications, but no citizen-facing personal name change service of the kind several other states run.
Affidavit
A written statement you swear is true, signed before a notary or oath commissioner. It states the old name, the new name, parentage, address and the reason for the change. It is the start of the process, not the finish.
Undertaking
A signed declaration accompanying the file, showing your old and new name with parentage and residential address, and declaring that the facts stated are true. It is listed separately from the affidavit.
Proforma
The prescribed application format the Department requires, computer typed in duplicate and attested, with two witnesses whose self-attested identity proofs are enclosed with the file.
Matching-contents certificate
A short certificate signed by you declaring that the contents of the hard copy and the soft copy are the same. It is a listed requirement, not an optional extra.
BharatKosh
The Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in, the only accepted channel for the Central gazette fee. Demand drafts were discontinued.
e-Gazette portal
egazette.gov.in, where published Central issues are searched and downloaded free. It is an archive, not a place to file an application.
Registrar correction
A correction to a birth or death record under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, through the body that registered it. In the city that is Lucknow Nagar Nigam. Not a gazette matter.
Alias
A second name a person is also known by, published alongside the main name where the record needs both to appear. It is a publishing choice, not a separate legal status.

What do you update after the gazette, and in what order?

The notification is the middle of the journey. Update in this order, because each office tends to ask for the one before it.

The order in which to update records after a Lucknow name change is published
OrderRecordWhat to take, and why it comes here
1AadhaarAt an enrolment centre with the gazette copy, the affidavit and identity proof. Almost everything downstream verifies against Aadhaar, so it goes first
2PAN cardCorrection application with the gazette attached. Banks and employers check PAN against Aadhaar
3Bank accountsBranch request with the gazette. Doing this before Aadhaar and PAN agree creates a mismatch that is slow to unpick
4PassportA re-issue with change of name. Rules are on passportindia.gov.in. Whatever you declare becomes the name on every visa issued afterwards
5Voter ID and driving licenceBoth accept the gazette. The licence goes through the transport office that issued it
6EPFO or UAN, and insuranceEmployer-routed for EPFO. Insurers want the gazette and the updated identity proof
7UP Board, university and employer recordsEach runs its own correction process and decides its own outcome. The gazette supports the application
8Property, revenue and business recordsThrough the relevant registration or revenue office, and separately for GST and company filings

Keep several printouts. Every office wants its own copy of the gazette page, and none of them return it. A published gazette PDF needs no attestation or certification; the Department's own guidelines say so. Aadhaar rules are on uidai.gov.in.

What will a gazette notification not do for you?

This is where most disappointment comes from, so it is worth being blunt.

A gazette notification is a dated public record of your declaration. It is strong evidence and most institutions accept it. What it does not do is silently rewrite anything. Every one of these still runs its own process, with the gazette as the proof you bring:

UP Board and university certificates

The Board of High School and Intermediate Education at Prayagraj runs its own correction procedure, and Lucknow University and the other universities run theirs. The gazette supports that application rather than replacing it, and the Board decides its own outcome on its own timeline.

Birth and death certificates

A Registrar correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, through the body that registered it. A gazette does not touch it.

Land, revenue and service records

Land and registration entries go through the relevant office. A service book goes through your own department. Neither updates because a notification was published in Delhi.

Aadhaar, PAN, passport and bank

Each has its own update process and its own form. The gazette is what you produce at each one, and each of them takes its own time.

How is a name corrected on an education document?

How to Name Change in Education Document in Lucknow लखनऊ में शिक्षा दस्तावेज़ में नाम कैसे बदलें

So anyone promising that one publication fixes everything has misunderstood the instrument. The gazette is the record that makes the change provable. What follows is a sequence of updates, and there is no way to skip it.

My birth certificate has a mistake. Do I need a gazette?

No, and this is one of the most expensive misunderstandings in the whole subject. If the mistake is in a birth certificate, the fix is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, through the body that registered the birth. Within the city that is Lucknow Nagar Nigam; elsewhere in the district it is the relevant nagar palika or gram panchayat. The Civil Registration System portal is crsorgi.gov.in.

A gazette notification can support that file, and sometimes the registrar will ask for it, but the gazette does not rewrite the certificate, and applying for one instead of going to the registrar simply delays the fix.

Correcting a name on a birth certificate in Lucknow

How to Name Change in Birth Certificate in Lucknow लखनऊ में जन्म प्रमाण पत्र में नाम कैसे बदलें

Which body registered it? The certificate itself names the issuing authority. Go back to whichever appears on the document, not to the one nearest where you live now. A birth registered in a village before the family moved into the city still belongs to the body that recorded it.

Spellings, UP Board, examinations and marriage

Urdu and Hindi spellings of the same name

Lucknow's records carry a long history of names written in more than one script and romanised by different hands. Mohd and Mohammad. Ahmad and Ahmed. Syed, Sayyid and Saiyad. Fatima and Fatema. Older entries were often written down from speech by a clerk working in whichever script the office used, and later documents romanised them differently again.

None of this is anyone's error, and both forms are perfectly proper. It becomes a problem only when two documents have to agree, which is usually at a passport counter, a bank KYC or an employment verification. A gazette notification declaring one final written form gives every office the same version to work from, instead of correcting one document at a time for years.

Choose the form deliberately, once. There is no correct answer between Mohd and Mohammad; there is only the one you want every office to use from now on. Look at what your UP Board certificate and your passport already carry before you decide, because those are the slowest and most expensive to change.

UP Board and university records

A spelling on a High School or Intermediate certificate that does not match a later Aadhaar is one of the commonest reasons people here start this process. The Board of High School and Intermediate Education at Prayagraj runs its own correction procedure, and Lucknow University and the other universities have theirs. The gazette notification supports that application rather than replacing it, and the Board decides its own outcome. Complete the gazette first, then apply with it attached.

Competitive examination candidates

As the state capital, Lucknow has a high concentration of examination candidates. Complete the gazette and update Aadhaar and PAN before you submit any form in the new name, so that the documents you attach already agree with each other. A form submitted mid-process, with some records changed and others not, creates exactly the mismatch the whole exercise was meant to remove.

Name change after marriage

The same three stages apply, with the marriage certificate attached, and it works in both directions, whether you are adopting a spouse's surname or returning to a maiden name. A marriage certificate on its own does not change your name in Government records.

And a point worth making plainly. If you keep using your existing name and nothing on paper changes, you do not need a gazette at all. Plenty of people are sold one they never required.

Minors

A parent or legal guardian applies on the child's behalf, swearing the affidavit and attaching the child's birth certificate. The minor fee applies, commonly Rs 1,700 with the usual revision caveat. Both parents signing avoids objections later, and where a surname is changing after a separation, expect to be asked for the other parent's consent or proof of sole custody.

Applying from abroad

Execute the deed and have it attested by the Indian Embassy or High Commission of the country you are in, then apply to the Central Gazette. The Government fee for Indians abroad is commonly Rs 3,500 for an adult and Rs 5,100 for a minor, with attestation and courier extra and variable. Family in Lucknow can send the file, but the papers must carry your signature.

How does a Government employee in Lucknow change a name?

As the state capital, Lucknow has a high concentration of state Government employees and secretariat staff, so this comes up constantly.

Central Government employees follow the Ministry of Home Affairs O.M. No. 190016/1/87-Estt.(A) dated 12 March 1987, executing a deed routed through the department so that the service book is updated alongside the gazette. The deed is a departmental instrument, not the British deed poll.

State Government employees should inform their own department as well. Tell your establishment section before you file, not after.

How does a Government employee in Lucknow do it?

How to Name Change for a Government Employee in Lucknow लखनऊ में सरकारी कर्मचारी का नाम कैसे बदलें

Do not do the gazette quietly and tell your office later. A service record that does not match the gazette creates problems at promotion and pension stage, sometimes years afterwards, and unpicking it then is far harder than doing it in the right order now.

Why do name change applications get rejected in Lucknow?

Almost every rejection is one of these, and every one of them is avoidable before you spend anything.

Going to the Minto Road press

Expecting a personal name change counter. It is a state printing establishment, and no such counter exists there. This costs a morning, not money, but it also costs confidence.

Following an address found online

Without confirming it, when four incompatible addresses are circulating for the same office and one of them is a Prayagraj address with Lucknow appended.

Making a demand draft payable in Lucknow

To a Controller of Publications who does not exist here. The draft route is closed anyway, and payment is on bharatkosh.gov.in only.

Typing a Government address a guide invented

Instead of going to dpsup.up.gov.in or egazette.gov.in directly. One page recommends a domain that was never registered.

One letter or one space out of place

Between the affidavit, the advertisement and the application. This is the commonest reason files come back, and the fee is not refundable.

A cutting instead of the full page

The Department checks the masthead and the date, so a clipping of just your notice is not accepted. Keep the complete original page of both papers.

Sending an original you will need again

Documents once submitted are not returned. Send self-attested copies wherever the list permits it.

Supporting documents older than a year

The Department expects documents that are not older than one year. An old address proof is enough on its own to send a file back.

Should you do this yourself, or use a service?

Many people in Lucknow should do this themselves. The steps are paperwork rather than law, no lawyer is required at any stage, and the only distance cost in the whole process is a speed post envelope.

What people pay for here is usually certainty about where things go, which is a reasonable thing to want in a city where the search results give four different answers. After that it is discipline: one exact spelling everywhere, matching wording in the affidavit and both advertisements, the right payment channel, and a complete file with nothing missing. On this route one mismatch means the file comes back after weeks with the fee gone.

What does a name change agent or consultant in Lucknow actually do?

Name Change Agent in Lucknow लखनऊ में नेम चेंज एजेंट

Name Change Consultant in Lucknow लखनऊ में नेम चेंज कंसल्टेंट

What an honest service looks like. Since the Central Gazette accepts applications only from the applicant directly, nobody can file it for you. An honest service prepares and checks your file while you sign and send it, tells you plainly when you do not need a gazette at all, separates the Government fee from its own charge, and gives you one address rather than four. That is exactly how Documentadvisor works.

Your Trust and Security First

A name change means handing your identity documents to someone you have never met. We take that seriously, and we would rather be slow and correct than fast and wrong.

Your documents stay private

Your scans go to one advisor and one file. We do not resell your details, add you to a marketing list, or publish anyone's papers as samples.

We work from the offices' own pages

Not from a search result. The Central address, parent ministry and file contents on this page come from the Department of Publication's own guidelines, and the state department from dpsup.up.gov.in.

We give you one address, not four

And we tell you which one is fabricated and why. In this city that is worth more than any other single thing a service can do for you.

We settle the exact form first

Against your UP Board certificate, your passport and your employer record. Spelling, spacing and initials, sent to you letter by letter, with your written confirmation before anything is drafted.

We tell you what to ignore

No Rs 999 all-inclusive package, no Rs 1,470 total, no invented Government domain, no demand draft, no compact disc and no expedited publication. Knowing what to discard saves more than knowing the process.

We tell you when you do not need us

If your case is a plain Registrar correction, or a Board correction the gazette will not perform anyway, we say so before you spend anything.

A typical case we handle: a Lucknow applicant whose Intermediate certificate read Mohd, whose Aadhaar read Mohammad and whose PAN had abbreviated it differently again, with a competitive examination form closing in six weeks. We compared all three, established that the Board certificate and the passport should decide the form, settled one final spelling in writing, drafted the affidavit and booked the Hindi and English notices the same week, built the file to the Department's own list and sent it by speed post. Aadhaar and PAN were updated before the examination form went in, so every attachment agreed. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

Everything You Need, In One Place

One place for the paperwork people find hardest: gazette notifications, affidavits, newspaper advertisements, rental agreements and property papers. Drafted, checked and filed by a team that does it daily.

How It Works

Booking a service with Documentadvisor is as easy as 1-2-3. Sit back and let our team do the work.

Book

Call, WhatsApp or fill the form. Tell us your old name, the exact new name you want, your area in Lucknow, where the new name has to work, and the deadline behind it.

Schedule

We settle the exact spelling with you in writing against your Board certificate and passport, draft the affidavit, book the Hindi and English notices, then build the file exactly to the Department's own list.

Relax

You sign and send it by speed post. We track it to publication and send you a written checklist of which record to update next, in order.

The questions Lucknow applicants search for most

Is there a gazette office in Lucknow for a name change?

Not for a personal name change. Lucknow has the Government Press of the Directorate of Printing and Stationery, Uttar Pradesh, which prints the state gazette. There is no public counter there where an individual gets a personal name change published, and there is no branch of the Central Gazette office in the city.

Where does a Lucknow name change file actually go?

To the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, behind Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, by post or courier. Your notification then appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India in about 30 to 45 days.

Why do different sites give different addresses?

Because several of them are wrong. One repeats a Prayagraj address with Lucknow appended, one names a locality near the Central Bus Station, one says Aishbagh, and one gives a Lucknow street with the Delhi pincode 110054. Lucknow pincodes run in the 226 series, so that last one is a Delhi address with the city name swapped.

Is lucknow.gazette.gov.in a real Government website?

No. That domain does not exist. It appears on a page that, in the same breath, advises readers to use only verified official websites. For the state department type dpsup.up.gov.in, and for downloading a published notification egazette.gov.in.

Can I pay by demand draft in Lucknow?

No. Payment is on bharatkosh.gov.in only, and the demand draft route is closed. In particular, do not make a draft payable to a Controller of Publications in Lucknow, because that officer sits in Delhi.

Will a gazette fix my UP Board certificate?

Not by itself. The Board of High School and Intermediate Education at Prayagraj runs its own correction procedure and decides its own outcome. Do the gazette first, then apply to the Board with it attached.

People also search for

  • Gazette office in Lucknow address: there is no Central Gazette office in the city. The Government Press at Minto Road belongs to the state Directorate of Printing and Stationery and prints the state gazette.
  • Government Press Minto Road Lucknow: a real state printing establishment under the Directorate of Printing and Stationery, Uttar Pradesh, with a unit at Civil Lines, Prayagraj. Its portal is dpsup.up.gov.in.
  • Name change fees in Lucknow: commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor on BharatKosh, plus stamp paper, notary and two newspaper advertisements. Totals like Rs 1,470 and packages from Rs 999 do not match the published fee heads.
  • Urdu name spelling correction Lucknow: Mohd and Mohammad, Ahmad and Ahmed, Syed and Sayyid are the same names written different ways. A gazette declaring one final form gives every office the same version.
  • UP Board certificate name correction: the Board's own process, supported by the gazette rather than replaced by it.
  • Name change agent in Lucknow: the Central Gazette accepts applications only from applicants directly, so what you need is a service that prepares, checks and tracks your file, which you sign and send.

Frequently asked questions on changing your name in Lucknow

The questions we are asked on the phone every day.

Is there a gazette office in Lucknow?+
Not for a personal name change. Lucknow has the Government Press of the Directorate of Printing and Stationery, Uttar Pradesh, which prints the state gazette. There is no public counter there where an individual gets a personal name change published, and no branch of the Central Gazette office anywhere in the city.
What does the Minto Road press actually do?+
It is the state printing establishment. It prints the Uttar Pradesh state gazette, which carries state laws, Government orders and departmental notifications, along with other Government printing. Uttar Pradesh does not run a citizen-facing personal name change service of the kind Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, Rajasthan or West Bengal offer.
Where does my file go, then?+
To the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, behind Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, by post or courier, or in person if you happen to be travelling. Publication follows in Part IV of the Gazette of India in about 30 to 45 days.
Why do search results give four different addresses?+
Because several are wrong. One page repeats a Prayagraj address with Lucknow appended, four times. Another gives two different locations on the same page. A third says Aishbagh. A fourth gives a Lucknow street with pincode 110054, which is a Delhi pincode, since Lucknow pincodes run in the 226 series.
Is lucknow.gazette.gov.in real?+
No, that domain does not exist. It appears on a page that in the same breath advises readers to use only verified official websites. Type dpsup.up.gov.in for the state department and egazette.gov.in for downloading a published notification.
How much does a name change cost in Lucknow?+
The Government fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, paid on bharatkosh.gov.in and revised each financial year. Adding stamp paper, notary, two newspaper advertisements and speed post, a realistic self-done total is Rs 2,000 to Rs 6,000.
Are the Rs 999 packages and the Rs 1,470 total real?+
The Government fee alone is commonly Rs 1,100, so a Rs 999 all-inclusive package cannot include it. The Rs 1,470 figure does not match the published fee heads either, and comes from a page that also recommends a Government website that does not exist.
Can I pay by demand draft?+
No. Payment is on bharatkosh.gov.in only and the demand draft route is closed. Do not make a draft payable to a Controller of Publications in Lucknow either, because that officer is in Delhi.
Do I need to send a CD with my file?+
No. What the guidelines ask for is the print matter without the witness portion in MS Word as a soft copy, along with a certificate signed by you that the hard copy and soft copy contents are the same. Older checklists still say to burn a disc.
How many newspaper advertisements do I need?+
Two dailies circulating in Lucknow, one Hindi and one English, is the standard filing practice and the safer choice for a file that has to satisfy several institutions later. Keep the complete original printed page of each, not a cutting, with the date visible.
Can an agent submit the file for me?+
No. Applications are entertained from the applicant personally or by post or courier, and the guidelines name agents and advocates as impermissible channels. A service can prepare and check the file; you sign and send it.
Do I need a court order?+
No. An ordinary name change needs the affidavit, newspaper and gazette stages. No court is involved, and India does not use the British deed poll system, so any checklist asking for a deed poll is importing foreign procedure.
Will I get a printed gazette by post?+
No. The Department's guidelines state that physical printing and sale of hard copies ceased completely on 1 October 2015. You open the issue on egazette.gov.in, use Control and F to find your name, and download the whole gazette as your copy. The guidelines say plainly that this needs no further certification.
Can a gazette alone correct my UP Board certificate?+
No. The Board of High School and Intermediate Education at Prayagraj runs its own correction process and decides its own outcome. The gazette supports the application. Do the gazette first, then apply to the Board with it attached.
My birth certificate has a mistake. Do I need a gazette?+
No. That is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, through Lucknow Nagar Nigam or whichever nagar palika or gram panchayat registered the birth. The portal is crsorgi.gov.in.
I have Mohd on one document and Mohammad on another. Which is correct?+
Both are proper forms of the same name, written by different hands at different times. The question is not which is correct but which you want every office to use going forward. Check what your UP Board certificate and passport already carry before deciding, then declare that exact form and never vary it.
How do I change my minor child's name?+
A parent or legal guardian applies on the child's behalf with the child's birth certificate attached, and the minor fee applies, commonly Rs 1,700 with the usual revision caveat. Both parents signing avoids objections later.
I am a Government employee. Is my process different?+
Central Government employees follow MHA O.M. No. 190016/1/87-Estt.(A) dated 12 March 1987, executing a deed through the department so the service book is updated alongside the gazette. State Government employees should inform their own department as well.
Will my documents be returned?+
No. Documents once submitted are not returned, so do not send an original you will need again. Supporting documents should also be no older than one year.
Can I pay extra to publish faster?+
No. There is no expedited or tatkal service. A promise of faster Government processing for a higher fee describes a company's own turnaround on your paperwork, not the Department's schedule.
How long does the whole thing take?+
Plan for 3 to 7 weeks: the affidavit usually same day, the newspaper 2 to 7 days, file preparation and speed post 2 to 4 days, then 30 to 45 days for publication in Part IV.

Who wrote and checked this page?

This guide is written and maintained by the Documentadvisor documentation desk, the team that files gazette notifications, affidavits and newspaper advertisements across India from our office in Burari, Delhi. The file contents, the fee heads, the one year rule, the non-return of documents and the download instructions on this page are taken from the Department of Publication's own guidelines for change of name, including its statement that physical printing and sale of hard copies ceased completely on 1 October 2015 and that the downloaded gazette needs no further certification. The Nawal Kishore Press dates are from the published record.

On the state department we have been deliberately careful. The Directorate of Printing and Stationery, Uttar Pradesh and its Government Press, Lucknow are real, and the department's portal is dpsup.up.gov.in. The street address most often given for the press is Minto Road, near Hazratganj, and that is the one address in circulation that recurs coherently. But because at least four incompatible addresses are being published for this office, we tell you to confirm on the department's own site before travelling rather than asserting one from a web page. That is the whole lesson of this page, and it would be strange to break it ourselves.

Last reviewed • Contact the desk on 9540005002 or support@documentadvisor.in • Documentadvisor is a private documentation consultancy and is not a Government body and not a law firm. This page is general information, not legal advice.

Where can you verify all of this yourself?

Every fact above can be checked at these sources. Please do check them, and please type the addresses rather than clicking a search result. That is not a figure of speech on this page.

  • Department of Publication, Government of IndiaThe Central Gazette office, and where a Lucknow file goes. Its homepage gives the Civil Lines address behind Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, names the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs as its parent, and identifies the Controller of Publications as its head. There is no branch in Lucknow.
  • Guidelines for Change of Name, Department of PublicationThe notice for Part IV, the undertaking, the proforma in two typed copies with two witnesses, the print matter in MS Word without the witness portion, the certificate that hard and soft copies are the same, the one year rule, the non-return of documents, the fee heads, and the sentence that an application either submitted personally or sent by post or courier only will be entertained.
  • Directorate of Printing and Stationery, Uttar PradeshThe state department that runs the Government Press in Lucknow and prints the state gazette, with a unit at Prayagraj. Type this address yourself. Its contact details are published here, which is where they should be confirmed before anybody travels.
  • The Gazette of India, e-Gazette portalSearch and download published Part IV notifications free. Hard copies ceased on 1 October 2015. It is an archive, not an application portal, and there is no Lucknow subdomain of it.
  • BharatKosh, the Non-Tax Receipt PortalThe only accepted channel for the Central gazette fee. Demand drafts and direct transfers were discontinued.
  • Ministry of Housing and Urban AffairsThe parent ministry of the Department of Publication. Not the Ministry of Home Affairs, which several pages in this niche name by mistake.
  • Board of High School and Intermediate Education, Uttar PradeshThe Board at Prayagraj that runs its own name correction procedure for High School and Intermediate certificates. The gazette supports that application rather than replacing it.
  • India Code, national repository of lawsThe Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, including Section 15, which governs birth certificate corrections.
  • Civil Registration System, Registrar General of IndiaThe national framework for birth and death registration and for Registrar corrections under Section 15.
  • Unique Identification Authority of IndiaAadhaar name update rules and accepted proofs, which is the first record to change after publication.
  • Passport SevaRe-issue with a change of name, and the reason the Central Gazette is the route for a name that has to work outside the state or abroad.
  • Lucknow Nagar NigamRegisters births and deaths within the city, so a Section 15 correction to a birth certificate issued here is applied for through the Corporation.

The short version

Everything on this page in ten lines

  • The Government Press at Minto Road is real, is the state printing establishment under the Directorate of Printing and Stationery, and is not a personal name change counter.
  • A Lucknow name change file goes to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, behind Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, by post or courier.
  • Four incompatible addresses circulate for one office, including a Prayagraj address labelled Lucknow and a Lucknow street with the Delhi pincode 110054.
  • Lucknow pincodes run in the 226 series, so any Lucknow address quoting 110054 is a Delhi address with the city name swapped.
  • One widely read page recommends lucknow.gazette.gov.in, which does not exist, while warning readers against unverified sites. Type Government addresses yourself.
  • Three stages: notarised affidavit, two newspaper notices in Hindi and English, then the prescribed file. Settle the exact spelling before anything is drafted.
  • Fee commonly Rs 1,100 adult and Rs 1,700 minor on bharatkosh.gov.in only, revised each financial year, never refundable. No demand draft, and no Controller of Publications in Lucknow.
  • The soft copy is a Word file without the witness portion, plus a certificate that hard and soft copies match. It is not a compact disc.
  • Hard copies ceased on 1 October 2015. Download from egazette.gov.in using Control and F, and it needs no further certification.
  • A UP Board correction is the Board's own process, and a birth certificate error is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the RBD Act, 1969.
