Name Change After Marriage

Most people who search this are about to pay for something they do not need. No Indian law requires you to change your name on marriage. If you are changing only your surname and you hold a registered marriage certificate, a gazette notification is usually not required at all. This page sets out when it is, when it is not, and the one Aadhaar rule that should settle the exact spelling of your name before you fill in a single form.

What actually changes when you change your name after marriage?

The written answer is directly below, in about sixty words. If you would rather hear the whole thing explained once in Hindi before reading, including which documents move and which stay exactly as they are, start here.

Quick answer

A name change after marriage in India is optional, open to either spouse, and subject to no deadline. For a surname change where you hold a registered marriage certificate, that certificate is usually all you need: Aadhaar, PAN, banks and Passport Seva accept it, and a gazette notification is generally not required. A gazette is for a first name or full name change, for cases with no marriage certificate, and where your documents already disagreed.

Do you actually need to change anything?

Three questions, answered in order, tell you what you need and what you can ignore.

At a glance

  • Compulsory? No. No Indian law requires a change of name on marriage, and there is no time limit.
  • Either spouse: a husband may take his wife's surname by exactly the same process, with exactly the same documents.
  • Usually enough: a registered marriage certificate, for a surname change.
  • Aadhaar limit: a name update is permitted twice in a lifetime. Beyond that it becomes an exception request to a Regional Office.
  • Aadhaar is not online: a name update needs a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with biometrics. Only address can be updated online.
  • Aadhaar fee: Rs 75 for a demographic update at a centre since 1 October 2025, and free if done with a biometric update at the same visit.
  • Passport: a name change is a reissue, not a correction. You get a new booklet with a new number.
  • No marriage certificate? Passport Seva's own booklet accepts Annexure J, a joint photo declaration by both spouses, in its place.
  • Gazette, only if needed: commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, on bharatkosh.gov.in only, publishing in Part IV in about 30 to 45 days.

Key takeaways

  • Decide the exact final spelling once, before you touch a form. UIDAI allows only two name updates in a lifetime, and a careless first one leaves you a single spare.
  • A registered marriage certificate does most of the work. It is accepted by UIDAI, by the PAN service provider, by banks and by Passport Seva.
  • The PAN service provider's own instructions accept, for a married woman, a marriage certificate, a marriage invitation card, a gazette publication, a certificate from a gazetted officer, or a passport showing the husband's name.
  • Passport Seva's instruction booklet lists Annexure J, a Joint Declaration in Lieu of Marriage Certificate. It is not Annexure D, which is the declaration for a minor's passport.
  • A gazette is genuinely needed where the first name or the whole name changes, where there is no marriage certificate and the institution will not accept a declaration, or where the documents already disagreed before the wedding.
  • It is not always just the surname. In Maharashtra and Gujarat the middle name commonly carries the father's given name and traditionally changes too.
  • Goa has a two day route for a bride's endorsement in the marriage register under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, entirely separate from the 30 day notice route under the state's 1990 Act.
  • In the Khasi Hills, a surname or clan name is governed by its own statute and cannot simply be assumed.
  • Work in order: Aadhaar, PAN, bank, passport, licences, employer, and the rest at your own pace. Each office asks for the one before it.
  • If you keep your name, you are already finished. Nothing to file, nothing to publish, nothing to update.

Is a name change after marriage compulsory in India?

Worth stating plainly, because a surprising number of pages imply otherwise.

No Indian law requires anybody to change their name on marriage. You may keep the name you have, adopt your spouse's surname, or use a hyphenated combination of both. There is also no time limit. You can do it a month after the wedding or fifteen years later, and nothing expires in the meantime.

It runs both ways as well. Either spouse may adopt the other's surname. A husband taking his wife's surname follows exactly the same process with exactly the same documents. That is rarely said on a page like this and it is simply accurate.

Keep your own name

Nothing to file. Your documents stay consistent, which is the state everybody else spends months trying to reach.

Take your spouse's surname

The commonest choice. With a registered marriage certificate this is usually a document update, not a gazette matter.

Hyphenate

A combined form. Treat it as a deliberate new spelling and settle it once, because it may sit outside what a certificate can evidence.

Add a care-of instead

Keep your own name and add your spouse as a care-of reference on Aadhaar. The household link, without touching your name.

The fourth option most people have never been told about

If your reason for changing is that somebody has asked for a document showing the connection between you and your spouse, you may not need a name change at all. Aadhaar allows a care-of reference, so the record can read with your own name and a care-of line naming your spouse. That gives you the link many people actually want, without altering your name on a single certificate, and without spending either of the two name changes discussed in the next section.

Three questions, in order. First, do you want to change your name at all, given that there is no obligation to. Second, what exactly is changing: only the surname, or the middle name too, or the whole name. Third, do you hold a registered marriage certificate. Those three answers decide everything else on this page, and for a great many people the first answer alone ends the matter.

How many times can you change your name in Aadhaar?

If you read only one section of this page, make it this one.

A name update on Aadhaar is permitted twice in a lifetime. Beyond that the request stops being an ordinary form and becomes an exception, decided by a UIDAI Regional Office. UIDAI publishes the governing document itself: a Standard Operation Procedure dated 28 October 2021, titled Name and Gender Update Request under Exception Handling Process. The very existence of a published exception procedure tells you that the ordinary route runs out.

Now think about how easily two get used up. Somebody changes their surname on marriage without much thought about spelling. A year later a bank rejects something because the spelling does not match a school certificate, so they correct it. Both changes are gone, and every future correction becomes a Regional Office problem rather than a form.

So decide the exact final form of your name once, before you touch anything. Not the surname alone. The whole thing, letter for letter, including spacing, including any middle name or initial, and including how it will be split into a given name and a surname on a passport. Write it on a piece of paper. That written line is what goes on every form afterwards.

Two things to check before you settle the spelling

Your hardest to change document

Usually a board certificate or a live passport. If your existing given name is spelled a particular way there, keep that spelling unless you are prepared to correct that document too, which is a separate application to a separate authority.

The passport field split

If you will ever need a visa, decide now what sits in the given name field and what in the surname field. That split follows you onto every visa issued against the passport, and onto tickets, and correcting it later means another reissue.

One practical point that catches people out. The document you produce has to connect the old name to the new one. A marriage certificate that shows only your maiden name and your spouse's name does not, by itself, evidence the new surname you are asking for. Check what your certificate actually prints before you queue for a counter, and ask the centre what it needs if the link is not on the face of the document.

Is a marriage certificate enough to change your surname?

For a straightforward surname change, the certificate does the work.

Take the offices one at a time, because each publishes its own list and they agree with one another.

Aadhaar accepts it

A registered marriage certificate is accepted as supporting proof for an Aadhaar name update at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, alongside your existing Aadhaar and a photo identity document.

PAN accepts it, and more besides

The PAN service provider's own correction instructions accept, for a married woman changing her name, a marriage certificate, a marriage invitation card, a gazette publication, a certificate from a gazetted officer, or a passport showing the husband's name. An invitation card is on the official list, which almost nobody mentions.

Passport Seva accepts it

The instruction booklet lists, for a change of name or surname on reissue, the old passport, an attested copy of the marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriage, or a joint photo declaration as per Annexure J.

Banks accept it

With the updated Aadhaar and PAN in hand, a bank name change is a branch form and a fresh signature specimen. It is the certificate plus consistency, not a notification, that the branch is looking for.

Name change after marriage in India: a registered marriage certificate with the Aadhaar, PAN and passport records it is used to update
The registered marriage certificate does most of the work. For a surname change it is usually the only document any of these offices needs.

One state portal says it outright

Odisha's own eGazette portal goes further than any private guide. It instructs applicants not to apply for a gazette notification where the purpose is an Aadhaar correction arising from marriage, divorce or adoption, citing the UIDAI standard operating procedure of 28 October 2021, and advises applying only where a full name or first name is being changed. A Government portal telling applicants to stop and go away is worth more than any assurance from a service that would be paid for the notification.

One honest caution, because that guidance is specifically about Aadhaar. It does not mean a gazette is never useful for a marriage name change. A particular passport office, a foreign employer, a board or a university may still want one for its own purposes. Ask the institution that actually has to accept your new name, and decide from their answer rather than from a general rule, including this page's.

So which case are you in?

Six situations cover almost everybody who reads a page like this. Find yours, and the right hand column is your answer.

Which route a name change after marriage takes, by situation
Your situationWhat you probably need
Surname only, with a marriage certificateThe marriage certificate. A gazette is usually not required at all
Surname only, no marriage certificateRegister the marriage, or use the joint declaration route where it is accepted. Confirm with each institution
Middle name also changing, as in Maharashtra and GujaratThe marriage certificate, but check with each institution, because this is more than a surname change
First name or the whole name changingA gazette notification. This is the case it is actually for
Your documents already disagreed before the marriageA gazette, to settle the underlying mismatch first, then the marriage change on top
You are keeping your existing nameNothing at all. No affidavit, no gazette, no updates

So the honest answer to the question most people are actually asking is no. For a surname change with a marriage certificate in hand, you do not usually need a gazette notification, and a service quoting you thousands for one should be asked directly why they think you do.

When do you genuinely need a gazette notification?

These are the cases where it is the right instrument and worth the money.

Your first name or whole name is changing

Not just the surname. A routine surname change and a complete first or full name change are treated as different cases, and for the latter a gazette notification and old identity proof may be required.

You have no registered marriage certificate

And the institution you need to satisfy will not accept a declaration alone. Register the marriage if you can, because the certificate does most of the work everywhere else.

Your documents already disagreed

If your board certificate and your Aadhaar never matched, the marriage certificate does not fix that. Settle the underlying mismatch first, then apply the marriage change on top of a consistent base.

A board or university requires it

Ask them. Many accept the marriage certificate; some do not. Their answer, in writing if you can get it, is the only one that matters for that certificate.

You are adopting a name that is not simply your spouse's surname

A new combined form, or a spelling that appears on none of your documents. Nothing evidences that except a notification.

You are a Government employee

The deed is routed through your department under the Ministry of Home Affairs memorandum of 12 March 1987, and the service record is updated on that basis. Do not do it quietly and tell the office later.

For those cases the route is the ordinary one: a notarised affidavit, two newspaper notices, and a file to the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, with the fee paid on bharatkosh.gov.in, commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, publishing in Part IV in about 30 to 45 days. Several states also run their own gazette routes, which may be cheaper for records held inside the state. The full Central process is set out in our all India name change guide, and the office itself in our gazette office in Delhi page.

The fee is not a fixed price. The Central figures are commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, Rs 1,700 for a minor and Rs 3,500 for an Indian applying from abroad, and the Department of Publication revises them each financial year. Payment is through BharatKosh only, it is non-refundable, and no demand draft is accepted.

Does the answer change in your state?

This catches people out, and almost no national guide mentions it. The general rules for adding, removing or changing a family name are in our surname change guide.

Maharashtra and Gujarat

The middle name commonly carries the father's given name, and traditionally changes to the husband's given name on marriage. So the change is to the middle name and the surname, which is a larger alteration than a national guide assumes. Check what each institution treats that as before you file anything.

Goa

The Registration Department's own citizens' charter lists two different services. A change of name or surname under the Goa Change of Name and Surname Act, 1990, decided by the Civil Registrar the day after a 30 day notice period ends if there are no objections. And separately an endorsement of name, the change of name of a Hindu bride, under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, with a stated timeline of 2 days. Ask which record you actually need corrected, because the two routes are not interchangeable.

Kerala and names with no surname

In Syrian Christian naming the father's given name has traditionally been carried as a middle element and substituted with the husband's after marriage. Separately, many Kerala records simply have no surname field filled. Marriage does not create one automatically, so if a form demands a surname, decide deliberately what goes there rather than letting a counter decide, because it will become your passport name.

The Khasi Hills, Meghalaya

A surname or clan name here is not a personal choice. The Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) Act, 1997 provides at Section 12(1) that no person shall change his or her Surname, Kur, Jait or Clan and take any other, except as the Act itself provides. A change goes by petition to the registration authority with published newspaper notice, and consent is refused where the change contravenes the custom of lineage. This is not a gazette matter. Ask the council first.

Punjab and Sikh naming

Where Singh or Kaur sits as the surname, adding or changing a family name is a decision about the whole pattern of the name rather than a simple substitution. Decide the entire shape at once, because you get two Aadhaar changes and no more.

Everywhere: the state gazette question

A State Gazette has its own numbering and its own fee. Part IV belongs to the Central Gazette only. If a page tells you your state gazette publishes in Part IV, it has copied a Central page and changed the place name.

How do you change your name after marriage, step by step?

Six steps. The first one is the only one that cannot be undone cheaply.

1

Settle the exact spelling

The whole name, letter for letter, including the passport field split. Two Aadhaar changes is the entire budget.

2

Get the marriage certificate

Registered, and check it links the old name to the new one on its face.

3

Decide gazette or no gazette

Surname only with a certificate: usually no. First or full name: yes.

4

Update Aadhaar first

At a Seva Kendra, in person, with biometrics. Everything downstream asks for it.

5

Then PAN, then the bank

PAN correction on the updated Aadhaar, then the branch and the signature specimen.

6

Then the passport reissue

A new booklet, not an edit. Do not book travel until it is in your hand.

What sends a file back. A spelling that differs between the affidavit and the notice. A marriage certificate that does not connect the old name to the new. Applying for the passport before Aadhaar and PAN carry the new form, so the supporting documents contradict each other. And, in the gazette cases, newspaper cuttings instead of complete original pages.

How do you change your name in Aadhaar after marriage?

Aadhaar is the document everything else asks for, so it goes first.

Aadhaar name update after marriage: where it is done, what it costs and what to carry
QuestionThe position
Can it be done online? No. Reporting of UIDAI's own site is that only the address can be updated through myAadhaar. A name update needs physical presence at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre, with biometric authentication.
What does it cost?Rs 75 for a demographic update at a centre, revised upward from Rs 50 with effect from 1 October 2025. It is free when done at the same visit as a biometric update.
How many times?Twice in a lifetime. Beyond that it becomes an exception request to a UIDAI Regional Office under the published procedure of 28 October 2021.
What do you carry? The registered marriage certificate, or the gazette notification if your case needed one, with your existing Aadhaar and a photo identity document.
How is it tracked?By the Update Request Number on the acknowledgement slip. Keep the slip. It commonly takes a couple of weeks to reflect.

At the counter

Fill the update form with the new name exactly as you decided it, in block letters, and read it back before you sign. Give biometrics, pay the fee, and collect the acknowledgement slip with the Update Request Number. Remember the two changes limit while you are filling that form: this is the moment where a careless spelling becomes expensive later, and the counter operator has no way of knowing what your board certificate says.

A small saving worth knowing. If a biometric update is due anyway, ask for both at the same visit. The demographic update is free when it is done alongside a biometric update, so the same trip does two jobs for one fee.

How does a passport name change after marriage work?

People are often surprised by this. The passport office does not edit your existing booklet.

You apply for a reissue and receive a new passport with a new number. On the Passport Seva portal the path is Reissue, then Change in Personal Particulars, then change of name or surname.

What the official booklet actually lists

Passport Seva's own instruction booklet sets out the documents by number, and for a change or addition of a spouse name on reissue the requirement is stated as 5, 14 or 56. Read as text, those are:

Document 5

The old passport in original, with a self attested photocopy of its first two and last two pages, the ECR or non ECR page, the page of observation if any, and the validity extension page if any.

Document 14

An attested copy of the marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriage. This is the ordinary route where the marriage is registered.

Document 56

A joint photo declaration signed by both husband and wife as per Annexure J. The booklet titles Annexure J as a Joint Declaration in Lieu of Marriage Certificate.

Correcting something you will read elsewhere. Several guides describe the joint affidavit for a spouse name as Annexure D. On the Passport Seva form itself, Annexure D is the declaration by a parent or guardian for the issue of a passport to a minor. It has nothing to do with marriage. The annexure that stands in for a marriage certificate is Annexure J.

What Annexure J has to contain

Reporting of the change describes the declaration as carrying a self attested joint photograph, the full names, address and marital status of both spouses, their Aadhaar numbers, voter identity numbers and passport numbers where available, and the date, place and signatures of both parties. The same reporting records that a divorce decree, a death certificate, a re-marriage certificate or a further Annexure J is what removes or updates a spouse name later.

This matters most in states where marriage registration is less common, because it removes the one document people most often cannot produce. It does not replace registering your marriage, which remains the thing that does most of the work at every other counter.

Confirm the current list yourself. Adding a spouse's name and changing your own surname are different requests, the annexures have changed recently, and the booklet is revised. Check the current annexure and document list on the Passport Seva portal for your specific case before you book an appointment, and do not rely on a blog, including this one, for that list.

Two practical cautions

Police verification is commonly conducted for a name change reissue, so keep the address proof consistent with what you have filed. And do not travel on a mismatch. If your ticket name and your passport name differ, that is a problem at the airport rather than at the passport office. Until the new passport is in your hand, book travel in the name on the passport you are actually carrying.

Which document should you update first after marriage?

Each office asks for the one before it, so the order is not a matter of taste.

The order in which records should be updated after a name change on marriage
OrderRecordWhat it wants
1AadhaarAt a Seva Kendra, with the marriage certificate or the gazette. In person, with biometrics.
2PANThe correction application, on the updated Aadhaar, with one of the accepted marriage proofs.
3Bank accountsIncluding joint accounts, and the signature specimen if that has changed too.
4PassportAs a reissue, once Aadhaar and PAN already carry the new form.
5Voter identity and driving licenceState authorities, each with its own form and its own proof list.
6EPFO or UAN, insurance, NPS, nomineesNominee records in particular, because they are the ones nobody checks until it matters.
7Employer recordsRemembering that HR, payroll and any verification agency are often separate systems.
8Board and university certificatesOnly if the institution requires it and permits it. Many people never do this at all.
9Property, society, utility and investment recordsAt your own pace, as each one comes up for renewal or transaction.
Do not chase everything at once. The first four decide whether the rest go smoothly. Once Aadhaar, PAN, the bank and the passport agree with each other, every later form has a consistent set of documents to copy from, and a counter that would have queried you simply does not.
Name change after marriage in India infographic: the three questions to ask first, the Aadhaar limit of two name changes in a lifetime, which of six situations needs a gazette, what Aadhaar, PAN, Passport Seva and banks each accept, Annexure J against Annexure D, the order to update records in, what each step costs, and what happens if you keep your name

What does a name change after marriage cost?

Read the last two rows together, because they are the whole commercial question.

The difference between those last two rows is several thousand rupees, and it turns on one question: is only the surname changing, and do you hold a marriage certificate. Ask any provider that question before you ask anything else, and listen to whether the answer explains your case or sells a package.

How long does the whole thing take?

Marriage certificate

The registering authority's own timeline, which varies by state and by whether the marriage is already registered.

Aadhaar

Commonly a couple of weeks to reflect, tracked by the Update Request Number on your slip.

PAN

A few weeks from the correction application.

Passport reissue

The Passport Seva timeline, plus police verification. Do not book travel against it.

Gazette, only if needed

30 to 45 days after the file is received, in Part IV.

Everything else

At your own pace, over weeks, as each record comes up.

Without a gazette, most people are through the main documents in about a month. With one, add roughly six weeks at the start. There is no expedited Government processing on the gazette route, whatever anybody offers you.

What mistakes do people make with a marriage name change?

Every one of these is avoidable, and most of them cost either money or a permitted Aadhaar change.

Buying a gazette that was never needed

For a surname change where the marriage certificate would have done. This is the single most expensive mistake on the list, and the one this page exists to prevent.

Deciding the spelling casually

Then using the second of two permitted Aadhaar name changes on a correction that a moment's thought would have avoided.

Forgetting the middle name

In Maharashtra or Gujarat the middle name traditionally changes too, so a surname only application leaves the record half changed.

Updating the passport before Aadhaar and PAN

So the supporting documents contradict the application. Sequence is not a preference here.

Booking international travel too early

In the new name, before the new passport has arrived. The mismatch is caught at the airport, not at the passport office.

Assuming certificates must be changed

School and degree certificates usually need not be. The board's rules apply only if you specifically ask for a change.

Updating HR and stopping there

Forgetting payroll, the background verification agency, the insurance administrator and the nominee records, which are all separate systems.

Not asking the one institution that matters

The body that actually has to accept the new name. Its answer beats every general rule, including everything on this page.

A myth worth naming. A court order is not involved in a name change after marriage, and nobody needs one. If a service mentions a court, ask which court, under which provision, and for what purpose. There is no answer.

Does marriage change your birth certificate?

No, and this is where a gazette gets sold for a job it cannot do.

A birth certificate records a fact as at the date of birth. Marriage does not alter that record, and no gazette notification rewrites it. Where a birth entry is genuinely wrong, the remedy is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, made by the municipal body that registered the birth. A gazette can support such an application. It does not replace it, and it is not the application.

And your old school and degree certificates?

You do not have to change a school or degree certificate just because you married. The board's or university's own rules apply only if you specifically ask for a change, and many people never do, keeping the certificate in the name it was earned under and using the marriage certificate to bridge the two. That is normal and it is accepted. An employer or a foreign university that queries it is asking for the bridge document, not for a reissued certificate.

Where this does become a gazette case. If your board certificate and your Aadhaar never agreed in the first place, that is a pre-existing mismatch and the marriage certificate cannot bridge it, because it evidences the marriage rather than the earlier error. Settle that first, then apply the marriage change on top of a base that is finally consistent.

What if you are keeping your name?

A short section, because this is a genuine option and it deserves saying properly.

If you keep the name you have, there is nothing to do. No affidavit, no gazette, no updates, no forms. Your existing documents remain correct and consistent, which is exactly the state everybody else on this page is spending a month or more trying to reach.

Proving the marriage

The marriage certificate is that proof, and it works without any name change at all. It is a record of the marriage, not a condition attached to your name.

Forms asking for a spouse

Most of them have a separate field for a spouse's name. Filling that field is not the same as changing yours, and no form requires that you do both.

Wanting the household link

Add your spouse as a care-of reference on Aadhaar while keeping your own name. You get the link on the record and both of your permitted name changes stay unspent.

Who do we help with a name change after marriage?

Applicants across India, and the answer is often that nothing needs to be filed at all.

Across every state and union territory

The marriage certificate route is the same everywhere, and where a gazette is genuinely needed the Central file goes to one address in Delhi by post or courier, so your state does not change the process. The full route is in our all India name change guide If the marriage has ended rather than begun, see name change after divorce instead.

The states with their own naming pattern

Maharashtra and Gujarat, where the middle name is in play; Goa, with a separate marriage register endorsement; Kerala, where a record may carry no surname at all; and the Khasi Hills, where a clan name is governed by its own statute.

Delhi and the National Capital Region

Where a Central file can be handed in over a counter rather than posted. See our guides for Delhi, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad.

Families changing a child's records too

A parent's change does not alter a child's record, and a child's own case runs on a different clock because board correction windows close. See our minor or child name change guide.

Indians living abroad

Where the deed is attested by the Indian Embassy or High Commission, the fee head is the one for applicants abroad, and the passport field split matters more than anywhere else because every visa is issued against it.

What do the terms on the forms actually mean?

Twelve definitions, each written to stand on its own.

Marriage certificate
The document issued by the authority that registered your marriage. It is the single document that does most of the work in a name change after marriage, and it is accepted by UIDAI, by the PAN service provider, by banks and by Passport Seva.
Gazette notification
The publication of a change of name in an official Government journal. For the Central route it appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India. It is generally not required for a surname change supported by a marriage certificate.
Part IV
The part of the Gazette of India in which personal change of name notifications appear. It belongs to the Central Gazette only. A State Gazette has its own numbering, so a page that puts your state gazette in Part IV has copied a Central page.
Annexure J
Titled in the Passport Seva instruction booklet as a Joint Declaration in Lieu of Marriage Certificate. It is a joint photo declaration signed by both spouses and is accepted in place of a registered marriage certificate on a reissue.
Annexure D
A different Passport Seva form altogether: the declaration by a parent or guardian for the issue of a passport to a minor. It is frequently and wrongly described elsewhere as the joint affidavit for a spouse name.
Reissue
The passport process used for a change in personal particulars. The existing booklet is not edited. A new passport is issued with a new number, and police verification is commonly conducted.
Update Request Number
The tracking number printed on the acknowledgement slip given at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra after an update request. Keep the slip, because it is how the request is followed up if it does not reflect.
Demographic update
An Aadhaar change to name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile or email, as distinct from a biometric update. At a centre it costs Rs 75 since 1 October 2025, and it is free when done alongside a biometric update.
Exception handling process
The UIDAI route for a name or gender update request that falls outside the ordinary permitted number, governed by a published standard operating procedure dated 28 October 2021 and decided by a Regional Office rather than at a counter.
Care-of reference
An Aadhaar entry naming another person alongside your address without altering your own name. It gives a household link on the record and spends neither of your two permitted name changes.
Registrar correction
A correction to a birth or death entry made by the registering authority under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. It is a different application to a different office and no gazette replaces it.
BharatKosh
The Government of India Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in, through which the Central Gazette fee is paid. It is the only accepted channel, and the payment is non-refundable.

Do you need help with this at all?

For most readers of this page, no, and that is worth saying first.

Most people reading this need a marriage certificate, a trip to an Aadhaar centre and a sensible update order, and nothing more. We would rather tell you that than sell you a notification you do not need.

Where advice genuinely earns its fee

A full or first name change. No marriage certificate. A middle name changing as well as a surname. A state with its own marriage register procedure. Documents that already disagreed. Or a passport field split that will follow you abroad.

And what an honest service will tell you

That your case is a document update rather than a gazette, and that the certificate you already hold is enough. That answer costs us the sale and saves you several thousand rupees, and we would rather give it.

In every case, the thing worth paying attention to is settling the exact final spelling before anything is filed, because Aadhaar gives you only two changes and one of them is about to be used. Documentadvisor works with applicants across India and will tell you plainly when the answer is that you need nothing at all.

Your Trust and Security First

Your documents stay private

Papers are handled by our own desk in Burari, Delhi, used for your file and nothing else.

We tell you when you need nothing

Surname only, with a registered marriage certificate, is usually a document update. Saying so costs us the largest category of work in this market.

We settle the spelling first

One written form of the whole name, chosen from the record hardest to change, with the passport field split decided before it locks in.

We know the state exceptions

The middle name in Maharashtra and Gujarat, Goa's marriage register endorsement, Kerala records with no surname, and the Khasi Hills lineage statute.

We quote the Government fee, not a package

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult on the Central route, revised each financial year, paid by you on BharatKosh. Our fee is separate and stated separately.

We say when we do not know

Passport annexures change. We tell you to read the current list on Passport Seva for your own case rather than trusting a page.

Everything You Need, In One Place

Deciding whether you need anything

Reading your actual documents against the case you are in, and telling you when the marriage certificate you already hold is the whole answer.

Settling the final spelling

One written form of the whole name, taken from whichever record is hardest to change, with the given name and surname split decided before a passport locks it in.

Gazette filing where it is genuinely needed

Drafting the affidavit, wording and booking the Hindi and English notices, and preparing the file for whichever route your case belongs to.

Aadhaar and PAN sequencing

What to carry to the Seva Kendra, which marriage proof the PAN provider accepts, and the order that stops one office contradicting the next.

Passport reissue preparation

The document set for a change in personal particulars, and the joint declaration route where a marriage certificate cannot be produced.

Birth certificate corrections

Registrar corrections under Section 15 through the body that registered the birth, when the real problem turns out to predate the marriage.

How It Works

1

Book

Call or WhatsApp with photographs of every document carrying your name, plus the marriage certificate. Tell us whether a passport is in view and whether any two documents already disagree.

2

Schedule

We tell you whether your case needs a gazette at all, what the exact final spelling should be, how the passport fields should be split, and what each step actually costs.

3

Relax

Where nothing needs filing we hand you the update order and step back. Where a file is needed we draft it, word the notices and check it, and you sign and submit it yourself.

The questions people search about changing a name after marriage

Is it compulsory to change your name after marriage in India?

No. No Indian law requires it. You may keep your existing name, adopt your spouse's surname, or hyphenate, and there is no time limit, so it can be done whenever you choose or not at all.

Can a husband take his wife's surname?

Yes. Either spouse may adopt the other's surname, and the process and the documents are identical. It is rarely mentioned and it is simply correct.

Do you need a gazette notification for a surname change after marriage?

Usually not, if only the surname is changing and you hold a registered marriage certificate. A gazette is generally needed where the first name or the whole name is changing, where there is no marriage certificate and the institution will not accept a declaration, or where the documents already disagreed.

How many times can a name be changed in Aadhaar?

Twice in a lifetime. Beyond that the request goes to a UIDAI Regional Office under the exception handling process published on 28 October 2021. That single rule is why the exact spelling should be settled before any form is filled.

Can an Aadhaar name change be done online?

No. Reporting of UIDAI's own site is that only the address can be updated online. A name update needs physical presence at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with biometric authentication, and costs Rs 75 at a centre.

What if there is no marriage certificate?

Passport Seva's own booklet accepts a joint photo declaration as per Annexure J, titled a Joint Declaration in Lieu of Marriage Certificate. For everything else, register the marriage if you can, because the certificate is what does the work at every other counter.

People also search for: name change after marriage documents, surname change after marriage online, Aadhaar name change after marriage, PAN card name change after marriage, passport name change after marriage, marriage certificate name change, gazette for name change after marriage, name change after marriage fees, Annexure J passport, how to change surname in Aadhaar card.

Frequently asked questions about a name change after marriage

Is it compulsory to change my name after marriage?

No. There is no law in India requiring it. You may keep your existing name, adopt your spouse's surname, or hyphenate. There is also no time limit, so you can do it whenever you choose or not at all.

Can a husband take his wife's surname?

Yes. Either spouse may adopt the other's surname, and the process and the documents are identical. It is rarely said on pages about this subject and it is simply accurate.

Do I need a gazette notification?

Usually not, if only your surname is changing and you hold a registered marriage certificate. A gazette is generally needed where your first name or your whole name is changing, where you have no marriage certificate and the institution will not accept a declaration, or where your documents already disagreed before the marriage.

What is the single most important thing to get right?

The exact final spelling of your whole name, decided once, before you fill any form. A name update on Aadhaar is permitted only twice in a lifetime, so a careless spelling now can leave you with no room to correct it later.

Can I update my Aadhaar name online?

No. Reporting of UIDAI's own site is that only the address can be updated online through myAadhaar. A name update requires physical presence at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or update centre with biometric authentication.

What does an Aadhaar name update cost?

Rs 75 for a demographic update at a centre, revised from Rs 50 with effect from 1 October 2025, and free when it is done at the same visit as a biometric update. Keep the acknowledgement slip with the Update Request Number for tracking.

Does the passport get corrected or replaced?

Replaced. You apply for a reissue under Change in Personal Particulars and receive a new passport with a new number. Police verification is commonly conducted for a name change reissue.

What if I do not have a marriage certificate?

Passport Seva's instruction booklet accepts a joint photo declaration signed by both spouses as per Annexure J, which it titles a Joint Declaration in Lieu of Marriage Certificate. Confirm the current annexure and document list on Passport Seva for your own case, and consider registering the marriage anyway, since the certificate does most of the work everywhere else.

Is the joint affidavit Annexure D or Annexure J?

Annexure J. On the Passport Seva form itself, Annexure D is the specimen declaration by a parent or guardian for the issue of a passport to a minor, and has nothing to do with marriage. Several guides get this wrong.

Can I travel before the new passport arrives?

Book travel in the name on the passport you are actually carrying. A mismatch between the ticket and the passport is a problem at the airport rather than at the passport office, and no reissue timeline is worth planning a trip against.

Do I have to change my school and degree certificates?

No, not automatically. The board's or the university's own rules apply only if you specifically ask for a change. Many people leave the certificate in the name it was earned under and use the marriage certificate to bridge the two, which is normal and accepted.

What documents does PAN accept for a name change after marriage?

The PAN service provider's own correction instructions accept, for a married woman, a marriage certificate, a marriage invitation card, a publication of the name change in a gazette, a certificate from a gazetted officer stating the name change, or a copy of a passport showing the husband's name.

I am in Maharashtra or Gujarat. Is anything different?

Possibly. The middle name commonly carries the father's given name and traditionally changes to the husband's on marriage, so the change may be larger than a surname substitution. Check what each institution treats that as before filing.

I am in Goa. Is anything different?

Yes. The Registration Department's citizens' charter lists an endorsement of name for a Hindu bride under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 with a stated timeline of two days, separately from a change of name or surname under the Goa Change of Name and Surname Act, 1990, which runs on a 30 day notice period. Ask which record you actually need corrected.

My name has no surname. What do I put?

Nothing is created automatically by marriage. If a form demands a surname, decide deliberately what goes there rather than letting a counter decide, because it will become your passport name and every visa will be issued against it.

Can I keep my name and still show the marriage?

Yes. The marriage certificate proves the marriage without any name change at all, and you can add your spouse as a care-of reference on Aadhaar while keeping your own name, which spends neither of your two permitted changes.

What if my documents already did not match before the marriage?

Fix that first, with a gazette if needed. Adding a marriage change on top of an existing mismatch produces two problems instead of one, and the marriage certificate cannot bridge an error that predates the wedding.

How long does the whole thing take?

About a month for the main documents if no gazette is needed. Add roughly six weeks at the start if one is, because Part IV publishes about 30 to 45 days after the file is received.

Can I pay to make the gazette faster?

No. There is no expedited Government processing on that route. Anybody offering speed is describing their own turnaround in preparing the file, not anything the Department does.

Is there a deadline after the wedding?

No. There is no legal time limit for updating your name after marriage, and nothing expires if you wait. A month, a year or fifteen years makes no difference to the process.

Do I need a court order?

No. No court is involved in a name change after marriage. If a service mentions one, ask which court and under what provision, and note that there is no answer to that question.

Who wrote and checked this page?

This guide is written and maintained by the Documentadvisor documentation desk, the team that files gazette notifications, affidavits and newspaper advertisements across India from our office in Burari, Delhi.

A commercial warning we are giving anyway. Marriage is the largest single category of work in this market, and this page tells most of its readers that they do not need the thing we sell. We have written it that way because it is true, and because a reader who is told the truth once tends to come back with the case that genuinely needs filing.

What we verified on official sources, and where. The Passport Seva instruction booklet lists the annexures, and Annexure J is titled a Joint Declaration in Lieu of Marriage Certificate while Annexure D is the specimen declaration by a parent or guardian for a minor's passport. The same booklet gives the requirement for a change or addition of a spouse name on reissue as documents 5, 14 or 56: the old passport with the prescribed photocopies, an attested copy of the marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriage, or a joint photo declaration signed by both husband and wife as per Annexure J. Several widely read guides describe that joint affidavit as Annexure D. On the form itself, it is not.

On PAN. The PAN service provider's own correction instructions list, for a married woman applicant, a marriage certificate, a marriage invitation card, a publication of the name change in a gazette, a certificate from a gazetted officer, or a copy of a passport showing the husband's name. The marriage invitation card is on the official list, and we have never seen a competing page mention it.

On Aadhaar, and how far we can vouch for it. UIDAI publishes a Standard Operation Procedure dated 28 October 2021 titled Name and Gender Update Request under Exception Handling Process, and its existence is the clearest published evidence that the ordinary route has a limit. The commonly stated limit is two name updates in a lifetime, after which the request goes to a Regional Office. Reporting in November 2025 of UIDAI's own site records that only the address can be updated online and that other demographic changes need an in person visit. The fee for a demographic update at a centre rose from Rs 50 to Rs 75 with effect from 1 October 2025, and is free when taken with a biometric update. Confirm the current position on uidai.gov.in or on 1947 before you travel to a centre, because this is the one area on this page where the rules have moved recently.

On the state exceptions. The Goa Registration Department's citizens' charter lists both a change of name or surname under the Goa Change of Name and Surname Act, 1990, decided by the Civil Registrar the day after a 30 day notice period where there are no objections, and separately an endorsement of name, the change of name of a Hindu bride, under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, with a stated timeline of 2 days. In Meghalaya, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) Act, 1997 provides at Section 12(1) that “No person shall change his/her Surname, Kur, Jait or Clan and take or assume any other Khasi surname, Kur, Jait or Clan except as hereinafter provided in this Act”, with a petition to the registration authority and published notice, and consent refused where the change contravenes the custom of lineage.

What we deliberately did not write. No statistics about how many women change their names, no commentary about tradition or modernity, and no framing of any of the four options as the normal one. This is a decision made overwhelmingly by women, and a page about paperwork has no business having a view about it. We have set out what each option costs and requires, and left the choice where it belongs.

Every claim above can be checked at these sources. Type the addresses yourself rather than following a link from any guide, including this one.

  • Unique Identification Authority of IndiaThe authority for everything on this page about Aadhaar: the accepted proofs for a name update, whether the update can be made online, the current fee at a centre, and the number of updates permitted. This is the one area where the rules moved recently, so read it before you travel to a centre.
  • UIDAI contact and support, including 1947Where an exception request goes when the ordinary route has been used up, and where to ask what your particular marriage certificate needs to show in order to link your old name to your new one.

In short

Everything on this page in ten lines

  • A name change after marriage is optional, open to either spouse, and subject to no deadline. No Indian law requires it.
  • If only your surname is changing and you hold a registered marriage certificate, that certificate is usually all you need.
  • Aadhaar, the PAN service provider, banks and Passport Seva all accept it, and a gazette notification is generally not required.
  • Decide the exact final spelling once, before you touch a form, because Aadhaar permits only two name changes in a lifetime.
  • An Aadhaar name update is not an online job. It needs a centre, biometrics and Rs 75, or nothing if a biometric update is due anyway.
  • A passport name change is a reissue. You get a new booklet with a new number, and police verification is common.
  • With no marriage certificate, Passport Seva accepts Annexure J, a joint declaration in lieu of a marriage certificate. It is not Annexure D.
  • A gazette is genuinely for a first or full name change, a case with no certificate, or documents that already disagreed.
  • Work in order: Aadhaar, PAN, bank, passport, licences, employer, and the rest at your own pace. Each office asks for the one before it.
  • And if you are keeping your name, you are already finished. Nothing to file, nothing to publish, nothing to update.

Most people who read this page need no gazette at all.

Send us photographs of your documents on WhatsApp today. We will tell you whether your case is a document update or a genuine gazette case, what the exact final spelling of your name should be before anything is filed, how the passport fields should be split, and the order to work in so that no office contradicts the next. If the answer is that you need nothing, that is what we will say.
