Name Change in Bank Records
There is a Reserve Bank rule almost nobody mentions, and it is worth knowing before you walk into a branch. Your Aadhaar or passport in your old name remains a valid KYC document, provided you also produce a marriage certificate or a gazette notification. So you do not have to wait for every other document to be updated before the bank will act.
How do you change the name on a bank account?
The written answer is directly below in about sixty words, and the section after it sets out the Reserve Bank rule that decides whether you need to fix Aadhaar first. If you would rather watch it explained once before reading, start here.
Name Change in Bank Account | How to Change Name in Bank Account नेम चेंज इन बैंक अकाउंट
A name change in bank records is a KYC update, made on the bank's own form at a branch. Under an RBI rule, an identity document in your old name stays officially valid when supported by a State Government marriage certificate or a gazette notification. One request covers every account under the same Customer ID. It is normally free, and you are expected to tell the bank within 30 days.
Do you have to update Aadhaar before the bank will change your name?
No. And believing you do is what makes people wait weeks for nothing.
At a glance
- Your old identity document is still valid. An RBI circular provides that a document is deemed officially valid despite a later change of name, if supported by a marriage certificate or gazette notification.
- The rule names exactly two documents: a marriage certificate issued by the State Government, or a Gazette notification. Nothing else is specified for this purpose.
- It is still current. RBI's KYC frequently asked questions of 9 June 2025 repeat it.
- You have 30 days. RBI's FAQ says the customer shall submit the updated documents within 30 days of the change. Most people have never heard this.
- One request, all your accounts, provided they sit under the same Customer ID. Ask the bank to confirm which ones do.
- CKYC can carry it further. A modification uploaded to the Central KYC Registry reflects across other institutions linked to your profile.
- A name change is not a self-declaration matter. The shortcut route added in 2025 covers no change or address only. Yours needs documents.
- Your account number does not change, and SBI, PNB and Bank of Baroda all use the same form wording for it.
- Give a fresh specimen signature if yours has changed, because cheques are verified against the record.
- Cheques already issued in the old name keep clearing. Tell your payees and hold large payments.
- It is normally free, though a replacement cheque book or card may carry the usual charges.
Key takeaways
- The rule, with its full citation. RBI circular RBI/2015-16/213, DBR.AML.BC.No. 46/14.01.001/2015-16, dated 29 October 2015, giving effect to the Prevention of Money-laundering (Maintenance of Records) Third Amendment Rules, 2015, notified as G.S.R. 730(E) on 22 September 2015, which inserted an Explanation into Rule 2(d).
- The operative words: “a document shall be deemed to be an OVD even if there is a change in the name subsequent to its issuance provided it is supported by a marriage certificate issued by the State Government or Gazette notification”.
- It went to nearly everybody: scheduled commercial banks, regional rural banks, local area banks, financial institutions, NBFCs, primary urban co-operative banks and payment system providers.
- And it is confirmed live in 2025. RBI's KYC FAQ of 9 June 2025 states that “an OVD containing the earlier name along with a copy of the Gazette notification, or marriage certificate issued by the State Government… can be submitted”.
- This reframes what a gazette is for. It is not a nice to have. It is one of only two documents the rule names as capable of preserving the validity of an identity document in an old name.
- But it is a full re-KYC, not a light edit. Paragraph 38 of the Master Direction says the bank runs the process it would run for a new customer, which is why the branch asks for so much.
- The bank owes you notice. The same amendment requires at least three advance intimations including one by letter before a periodic updation falls due, and three reminders including one by letter after, fully implemented from 1 January 2026.
- But do not confuse the two. Business correspondents may now collect self declarations, and that route is only for no change or address only change. A change of name needs the documentary route.
- Within the same bank you need no fresh documents for another product unless something has changed, per RBI's FAQ.
- The certificate wording trap. A marriage certificate naming one person as the wife of another may still not show the combined name you want, and then the bank asks for more.
- Processing is reported from about 4 working days at some private banks to 7 to 15 working days generally, with public sector banks often slower.
What does the RBI rule on a changed name actually say?
It is a right rather than a courtesy, and it is quoted here in full.
An amendment to the Prevention of Money-laundering (Maintenance of Records) Rules, 2005, circulated by the Reserve Bank to every bank, NBFC, primary urban co-operative bank and payment system provider in the country, provides this. The consolidated Master Direction on KYC, at paragraph 3(a)(xiv), carries it as the Explanation to the definition of an officially valid document:
Read that carefully. An identity document in your old name does not stop being valid merely because your name has changed. It remains officially valid, so long as you can produce one of two things alongside it: a State Government marriage certificate, or a gazette notification recording the change.
Where it comes from, so you can quote it back
The circular
RBI/2015-16/213, DBR.AML.BC.No. 46/14.01.001/2015-16, dated 29 October 2015.
What it gives effect to
The Prevention of Money-laundering (Maintenance of Records) Third Amendment Rules, 2015, notified as G.S.R. 730(E) on 22 September 2015, inserting an Explanation into Rule 2(d).
Who it went to
Scheduled commercial banks, regional rural banks, local area banks, financial institutions, NBFCs, primary urban co-operative banks, payment system providers and authorised money transfer agents. Nearly everybody.

So the bank cannot turn you away for that reason
Bring the old document and the linking proof, and the rule says that combination is valid. This wording appears verbatim in banks' own published KYC and anti money laundering policies, so if a branch official is unsure, the words are in their own policy document and you can ask them to look.
Updating Aadhaar first is still sensible, and we recommend it elsewhere in this series. But that is sequencing advice, not a precondition, and a reader who believes the two are the same thing may sit waiting for weeks when the bank could have acted immediately. See our Aadhaar name change guide for that step, and note that Aadhaar allows only two name changes in a lifetime.
How long do you have to tell the bank your name has changed?
Thirty days. And almost nobody knows this one either.
The clock starts at the document, not the event
It runs from when the document changes, not from the wedding or the decree. So the practical trigger is the day your corrected Aadhaar, passport or gazette arrives.
Which is another reason not to wait
If you hold a marriage certificate or a gazette already, you can go to the bank now under the rule above, rather than waiting for Aadhaar and then discovering a thirty day clock you have already started.
How do you change your name in bank records, step by step?
Six steps, and the first one saves most people a wasted month.
Check what the rule already allows
You do not have to update Aadhaar first. An identity document in your former name stays officially valid when you present it with a State Government marriage certificate or a gazette notification. Read the wording in the rule before you go.
Check your document proves the name you want
The linking document is the whole exercise. A certificate that reads as one person being the wife of another may not establish the exact combined form you want recorded. Where it does not, a gazette notification is the cleaner route.
Fill the bank's form and get an acknowledgement
Download it from the bank's site or collect it at the branch. Carry originals plus photocopies. Then get a reference number before you leave the counter, because that is what a follow up needs. See the document list.
Confirm which accounts it actually covers
Inside one bank the unit is the Customer ID, not the account. Deposits opened years ago at another branch can sit under a second identifier and get missed. Ask the bank to list what falls under the one being updated. More in this section.
Use a CKYC modification for the rest
A modification form at any participating institution updates the central record, which other banks, insurers and mutual funds can then download with your consent. Verify the result, do not assume it. Details in CKYC.
Close out the signature, cheques and linked items
A fresh specimen signature if it has changed, then the debit card, cheque book, passbook, net banking profile, loans, demat, payment handles and every standing instruction carrying the name.
How To Change Name In Bank Account Or Passbook बैंक खाता या पासबुक में नाम कैसे बदलें
Does one request cover all your accounts at the same bank?
Yes, if they share a Customer ID. And that is a bigger if than people assume.
Within a single bank the unit is not the account. It is the customer relationship. A name change applies across all accounts linked to your Customer ID, so a savings account, a fixed deposit, a recurring deposit and a loan held under the same ID are all updated by one request, and you do not file separately for each.
And what is separate even within the same bank
Credit cards
Often held on a different system entirely and needing their own request, even at the same bank.
Demat accounts
Follow their own KYC route through the depository rather than through the branch.
Lockers
Which carry a signed agreement in your old name, and that agreement is its own document.
Joint accounts
Where each holder completes the KYC update separately. One holder's update does not carry the other.
Nominations
A different instruction altogether. Changing your own name does not alter who you have nominated.
And if a nominee's name changed
That is their update, not yours, and it will not happen because you filed something.
Can one update carry your new name to other institutions?
Through CKYC, often yes. It is the closest thing to a shortcut in this whole exercise.
The Central KYC Records Registry, maintained by CERSAI, holds a single centralised KYC record that participating banks, NBFCs, insurers and mutual funds can access. It exists precisely so that the same documents do not have to be submitted twenty times. RBI's own FAQ defines the KYC Identifier as the unique number assigned to a customer by the registry, and records that a customer can give consent for an institution to download the valid KYC data from it.
How the modification works
Submit a CKYC modification form with the updated proof at any participating institution. It verifies and uploads the revised data to the registry.
What then happens
The change reflects across institutions linked to your CKYC profile. One properly executed modification can do the work of many separate applications.
Ask for your KYC Identifier
Knowing it makes every future account opening shorter, because you can simply authorise the download rather than assembling the file again.
Do you need to change your signature at the bank too?
Only if it has actually changed. But if it has, this matters more than people expect.
Banks hold a specimen signature and compare cheques against it. If your name changes and you now sign differently, that is a separate update, and a cheque signed in a way the bank does not recognise is returned.
A changed signature needs a fresh specimen
If you have started signing with a new surname, tell the bank and give them the new one at the same visit. It costs nothing extra and saves a returned cheque.
A long gap causes trouble by itself
If your account was opened many years ago, your natural signature today may not much resemble the one on file. Expect additional identity verification, and treat it as routine rather than as suspicion.
If you cannot reproduce the old one
Some banks accept a passport copy, with the new specimen required to match the signature on the passport. A useful route out of an awkward position, and worth asking about.
What happens to cheques you already issued in your old name?
They keep clearing. The update changes the bank's record, not the paper you handed out.
Tell anybody holding your cheques
Particularly for large amounts, so that a payee's bank is not surprised by a name that no longer matches your record.
Hold the significant payments
Consider waiting for the new cheque book rather than issuing on the old one during the transition. For routine amounts it rarely matters; for large ones it can.
Some banks tell you expressly that you may continue using the old cheque book and debit card, and that is generally true for the account to keep functioning normally. But for anything substantial, the new book is worth waiting for.
What documents does a bank name change need?
Six items, and the second one is the one the RBI rule turns on.
The bank's own form
The name change or KYC update form, downloadable from the bank's website or available at the branch.
The linking document
A State Government marriage certificate, a certified divorce decree, or a gazette notification. This is the document the rule turns on.
A photo ID in the new name
If you have one. You are not required to have one, which is the whole point of the rule.
Your existing photo ID in the old name
Which remains officially valid when supported by the linking document above.
Passbook or account details
And a recent photograph if the bank asks for one.
A fresh specimen signature
If it has changed. Do it in the same visit rather than as a second errand.
What does a bank name change cost, and how long does it take?
Nothing, and about a week or two. Which after the passport is a relief.
| Item | Position |
|---|---|
| Name or KYC update itself | Banks generally do not charge for it |
| Typical processing | Reported from about 4 working days at some private banks to 7 to 15 working days more generally |
| Public sector banks | Often slower than private banks |
| New cheque book | May carry the usual issue charges, which are not name change charges |
| Replacement debit card | May carry the usual replacement charge |
| CKYC modification | Submitted through a participating institution, not directly by you |
What else needs updating once the bank record changes?
Ten things hang off it. Some update themselves; others need a separate request.
Debit card
The old one keeps working but shows the old name. Request a replacement.
Cheque book
Request a fresh one, and stop issuing from the old book for large amounts.
Passbook
Usually reprinted on request at the branch, and quick.
Net and mobile banking profile
The display name, which often lags the core record by a cycle.
Fixed and recurring deposits
If any sit outside the updated Customer ID. Check the list you asked the bank for.
Loans and credit cards
Often separate systems, even within the same bank.
Demat account
Through the depository participant, on the depository's own KYC route.
UPI handles and payment apps
And anything else keyed to the account that displays a name.
Standing instructions and mandates
Auto debits and mandates, where the mandate itself carries your name.
Does a bank passbook need its own name change?
No, and the section below sets out why the book simply prints what the record already says. If you would rather see it done once first, start here.
How to Change Name in Bank Passbook बैंक पासबुक में नाम कैसे बदलें
How do you change the name in a bank passbook?
You do not, directly. And that is the single most useful thing to understand about it.
A passbook is a printout of the account ledger, not a record in its own right. The name on it is pulled from the bank's core record. So there is no separate passbook name change: you file the name change or KYC update on the bank's own form, the core record changes, and the passbook then prints the new name when it is reprinted or reissued.
Ask for the right thing at the counter
Walking in and asking to change the name in the passbook gets you a puzzled look, because no such request exists. Ask for the name change or KYC update instead, and the book follows on its own.
Reprint or reissue, depending on the bank
Some banks simply print continuation pages in the same book with the corrected header. Others issue a fresh book. Both are normal, and neither means anything went wrong.
A replacement book may carry a charge
The name change itself is normally free, but a replacement or duplicate passbook can attract the bank's own charge. It is published in its schedule of charges, so ask before you agree.
Keep the old passbook
Do not surrender or discard it. It is your transaction history in the former name, and it is the simplest thing to produce when somebody later asks you to link the two names.
A passbook only account is no different
An account with no cheque book and no debit card still follows exactly the same route. The rule is about the record, not about which instruments you hold.
Check the record, not only the book
A reprinted book proves the printer worked. Confirm the name on your account statement header and net banking profile too, since the display name often lags the core record by a cycle.
How do you change your name in State Bank of India records?
On a form with no name of its own, and not through YONO.
The form is the Customer Request Form
There is no separate SBI name change form. SBI publishes one general Customer Request Form carrying 46 numbered tick boxes, and a name change is item 9. It carries no form code, which is why searching for one gets you nowhere.
What item 9 actually says
“Change my Name to:” followed by “(Relevant document e.g. Government Gazette Notification / Marriage Certificate to be attached)”. That is SBI's entire published document list, and note the “e.g.”.
The same form does three other things
Item 16 changes your signature, item 22 requests a duplicate passbook, and item 11 transfers the CIF between branches. Tick only the boxes you need, as the form instructs.
It is published in twelve languages
SBI hosts the Customer Request Form in twelve language versions, so a branch outside your home state is not a reason to be handed something different.
YONO will not do this one
SBI's own notice is unambiguous: KYC updation through the YONO app is “only for those customers where there is no change in KYC”. The same condition governs Internet Banking and the ATM route. A name change is a change, so all three are closed to it.
No published charge for the change itself
SBI's service charges annexure carries no line item for a name change or a KYC update. What it does price: a duplicate passbook at Rs 100 plus GST, and Rs 50 plus GST per page of 40 entries. The first passbook and continuation pages are free.
How do you change your name in HDFC Bank records?
This is the one bank that puts the Customer ID promise in writing.
The form has a real name and a code
“Name / Signature / Mode of Operations Change Request Form”, printed with the code 946/V2/24.03.2023. Unlike the public sector forms it is purpose built for this.
It states the Customer ID scope expressly
The declaration reads that the change “will affect all accounts held by me with HDFC Bank under the captioned Customer ID”. No other bank we checked says this in writing, which makes it the cleanest confirmation of how the unit actually works.
There is a genuine online route
HDFC runs a Change of Name journey whose subtitle is “Update your name as per Aadhaar”, finished with Video KYC. Its own confirmation: “Your name will be updated across all Savings/Salary Accounts linked to your Customer ID.”
But the conditions are strict
Your new name must already be in Aadhaar, your PAN must already be updated in the bank's records with the physical card available for Video KYC, and you must be physically present in India. HDFC states plainly that otherwise “a branch visit will be required”.
Signature change sits in its own section
Form 946 handles it separately, with a new specimen and two named witnesses. A name change does not force a signature change, and nothing on the form requires the two together.
What it costs
No name change or KYC update charge is listed anywhere in HDFC's schedule of fees. A duplicate passbook is Rs 100, or Rs 90 for senior citizens, and a replacement debit card is charged at the usual rate.
How do you change your name in ICICI Bank records?
Aadhaar first, and PAN had better match it.
ICICI publishes terms rather than a form
For a resident savings account ICICI does not publish a downloadable name change form. What it publishes is a Name Change Terms and Conditions page, written for a request e-signed with Aadhaar rather than filled in on paper.
The name comes from Aadhaar
Its own wording: “basis this request, my name mentioned in the Aadhaar will be updated in the Bank records”. So at ICICI, Aadhaar is not optional sequencing. It is the source.
And PAN has to agree with it
Quoted exactly: “I am aware that if name on Aadhaar and name on PAN do not match, my request for name change will be rejected.” That is a stated ground of rejection, so check the two against each other before you apply.
What happens to your cheques
ICICI states it directly: “All cheques collected and paid in future by the Bank in this account will be drawn in the changed name as given in the request form.” Its NRI page adds that you “can continue with the old cheque book and debit card”.
The NRI route is different and is on paper
A Name, Signature and MOP Change Form posted to ICICI's NRI cell in Mumbai or handed in at a branch, processed within two working days of receipt if the file is in order, though transit alone is seven to fifteen working days.
What it costs
No name change fee is listed. A duplicate passbook is Rs 100 to issue plus Rs 25 per page to update, a replacement debit card Rs 200, and cheque leaves are free for the first 25 in a year.
How do you change your name in Punjab National Bank records?
Form PNB 1250, and it has an actual code you can ask for.
The form is PNB 1250
Titled Customer Request Form and printed with the code PNB 1250 at the foot. There is no separate change of name form. Asking for it by code at the counter saves an argument.
Title and name are two different items
Item 8 is “Change my Title to:” and item 9 is “Change my Name to:”. If you are moving from Kumari to Smt as well as changing the name itself, those are two boxes, not one.
Two working days, in PNB's own words
The form states that your request will be processed within two working days. That is PNB's published turnaround, not a promise about how quickly every downstream item follows.
A Kashmiri language version exists
PNB publishes PNB 1250 in Kashmiri alongside the standard form, which is worth knowing if the branch offers only one version.
What it costs
No line item for a name change or a KYC update. A duplicate passbook with the latest balance is Rs 100; with previous entries it is Rs 2 per entry, minimum Rs 100 and maximum Rs 1,000.
And a charge that is nil for you
PNB's schedule prices a change of authorised signatory or operating instructions at Rs 200 for non individuals and nil for individuals. An individual should not be charged for a signature change.
What about Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank and Union Bank of India?
And why three of these forms are word for word the same.
| Bank | The form | Duplicate passbook |
|---|---|---|
| Bank of Baroda | Customer Request Form, item 9, no printed code. Says “attach self attested copy of document for verification with original” | Rs 100 metro and urban, Rs 75 rural, semi urban and senior citizens |
| Canara Bank | No resident name change form is published. Its Deposit Policy reproduces the RBI clause on a changed name word for word, so ask at the branch | Rs 100 plus GST, with the first pass sheet of the month free |
| Union Bank of India | Service Request Form SRF-1, section 8, “Addition / Deletion / Modification of Name”, with fields for Customer ID and title. Published in 13 regional languages | Rs 100 plus GST. Addition or deletion of names is a separate Rs 100 |
What are the common mistakes on a bank name change?
Eight of them, and the first one costs weeks for no reason at all.
1. Waiting for Aadhaar before approaching the bank
When the RBI rule makes the old document valid with a marriage certificate or gazette alongside it. This is the most expensive misunderstanding on the page, and it costs only time.
2. Assuming one request covers a different Customer ID
At the same bank. Ask for the list of accounts under the ID being updated, and chase anything missing.
3. Forgetting credit cards, demat and lockers
Which are usually separate even where everything else is one relationship.
4. Not giving a fresh specimen signature
When the signature has changed. Cheques are verified against the record, and a mismatch is a returned cheque.
5. Issuing large cheques on the old book
During the transition, when the new book is a fortnight away and the payee's bank may query it.
6. Assuming the CKYC record propagated
Everywhere, without checking. It usually does. It does not always.
7. Assuming nominations update with your name
They do not. It is a separate instruction and it stays exactly as it was.
8. Producing a certificate that does not show the name you want
A marriage certificate showing both names but not the combination you are asking for. Check the wording before you travel.
Should you do the bank before or after the passport?
Bank before passport. And thanks to the RBI rule, the bank can come earlier than most guides suggest.
1. Aadhaar
Because most things ask for it, and it allows only two name changes in a lifetime. See our Aadhaar guide.
2. PAN
Which takes its data from Aadhaar on the paperless route. See our PAN guide.
3. Bank accounts
Or earlier, under the RBI rule, if you already hold the marriage certificate or gazette.
4. Passport
Which checks Aadhaar and PAN and wants two documents already in the new name. See our passport guide.
5. Voter ID
Free. See our voter ID guide.
6. Driving licence
About Rs 200. See our driving licence guide.
7. Insurance and the vehicle RC
Which the licence feeds, and which the licence correction does not touch by itself.
8. Everything else
Your LIC policy, employer, provident fund, investments, property and utility records.

Where can we help with a bank name change?
Across India, and on the document rather than the form.
All 28 states and 8 union territories
The RBI circular went to every bank, NBFC and payment system provider in the country, so the rule is the same wherever you bank.
The linking document, which is the whole job
Whether your marriage certificate actually establishes the name you want, or whether a gazette notification would be cleaner.
Preparing the gazette properly
One of only two documents the rule names. The Central file goes to Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. See our gazette office in Delhi page.
What we will not charge you for
A free branch form. If that is all you need, we will say so.
Call 9540005002, WhatsApp 9540005064, or write to support@documentadvisor.in, Monday to Saturday, 9 AM to 6 PM. For the reason behind your change, see our guides on a name change after marriage, a name change after divorce, a surname change and a minor or child name change.
What do the banking terms on this page mean?
Twelve definitions, each written to stand on its own.
- Officially valid document
- A document accepted for identification under the Prevention of Money-laundering (Maintenance of Records) Rules, 2005, shortened to OVD. An explanation inserted in 2015 keeps such a document valid despite a later change of name, if supported by a State Government marriage certificate or a gazette notification.
- Know Your Customer
- The identification process a regulated entity must complete for a customer, commonly shortened to KYC. A change of name is handled as a KYC update rather than as a new account, and the account number does not change.
- Periodic updation
- The re-verification of a customer's KYC at intervals set by risk category. Amendment Directions of June 2025 required banks to send three advance intimations and three reminders, at least one of each by letter.
- Customer ID
- The identifier under which a bank holds a customer relationship rather than an individual account. A name change applies across all accounts linked to the same Customer ID, which is why the list of linked accounts is worth asking for.
- Central KYC Records Registry
- The centralised registry maintained by CERSAI holding one KYC record accessible to participating banks, non-banking financial companies, insurers and mutual funds. Shortened to CKYC.
- KYC Identifier
- The unique number assigned to a customer by the Central KYC Records Registry. A customer may consent to an institution downloading their KYC data with it.
- Regulated entity
- An institution subject to the Reserve Bank's KYC directions, including banks, non-banking financial companies, co-operative banks and payment system providers. Shortened to RE.
- Self declaration
- A statement a customer may give in place of documents where there is no change in KYC information, or a change only in address details. It is not available for a change of name, which requires the documentary route.
- Business correspondent
- An agent engaged by a bank to deliver services outside a branch. Since June 2025 one may collect a self declaration after biometric authentication, but only for the limited cases that route covers.
- Specimen signature
- The signature a bank holds on record and compares cheques against. Where it changes with a name, a fresh specimen is required. HDFC takes two named witnesses to it.
- Nomination
- The instruction naming who receives the balance of an account on the holder's death. It is unaffected by a change of the holder's own name and needs its own form.
- Gazette notification
- The publication of a change of name in an official Government journal, with a date. For bank KYC it is one of exactly two documents the rule names as preserving the validity of an identity document issued in a former name.
Do you need help with a bank name change?
With the branch form, no. With the document you take to it, quite possibly.
| Your situation | Do it yourself? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage certificate clearly shows the name you want | Yes | A free form and one visit. The RBI rule does the rest |
| Divorce, with a certified decree recording the name | Yes | The decree is the linking document and it does the work |
| The certificate does not show the combination you want | Advice helps | This is the commonest failure. A gazette is often the cleaner route |
| A first name or full name change | Advice helps | A gazette is genuinely needed, and it is one of only two documents the rule names |
| A spelling correction with nothing linking the two versions | Ask first | If nothing you hold connects them, a gazette may be the only route |
| The branch says your old Aadhaar is not acceptable | Yes, but quote the rule | The wording is in the bank's own KYC policy. Ask them to look |

We read your certificate first
The commonest failure is a certificate showing both names but not the combination you want. We check before you travel.
We settle the spelling once
Letter for letter, so the bank, Aadhaar, PAN and the passport all end up saying the same thing.
We tell you when to keep your money
The bank update is free. If that is all you need, we will point you at the branch rather than invoice you.

Preparing what you present at the branch
Originals, copies, the fresh specimen signature and the acknowledgement to ask for before you leave.

The questions people search about a bank name change
Do you have to update Aadhaar before the bank will change your name?
No. Under an RBI circular giving effect to an amendment to the Prevention of Money-laundering (Maintenance of Records) Rules, 2005, a document remains officially valid despite a subsequent change of name, provided it is supported by a State Government marriage certificate or a gazette notification. Updating Aadhaar first is good sequencing, but it is not a precondition.
Which documents does the RBI rule actually name?
Exactly two: a marriage certificate issued by the State Government, or a Gazette notification indicating the change of name. Nothing else is specified for this purpose, which is a clearer statement of what a gazette is for than most of what is written about it.
What if the branch says your old Aadhaar is not acceptable?
The wording appears verbatim in banks' own published KYC and anti money laundering policies. Ask them to check their KYC policy on officially valid documents where the name has changed. The Reserve Bank repeated the position in its own KYC frequently asked questions dated 9 June 2025.
How long do you have to tell the bank?
Thirty days. RBI's FAQ states that the customer shall submit the updated documents to the regulated entity within 30 days of the update, change or modification in the documents. The clock runs from the document changing, not from the wedding or the decree.
Does one request cover all your accounts?
Within a bank, a name change applies across all accounts linked to your Customer ID. Ask the bank to confirm which accounts fall under it, because an older account opened at a different branch can sit under a separate ID. Credit cards, demat accounts and lockers are usually separate in any case.
Can a self declaration be used for a name change?
No, and this is widely misread. The 2025 amendment allowing business correspondents to collect a self declaration applies where there is no change in KYC information, or a change only in address details. A change of name is neither, and needs the documentary route.
Which form does your bank actually use?
SBI, PNB and Bank of Baroda all use a general Customer Request Form on which a name change is item 9, with wording identical at all three because it is the same Indian Banks' Association template. PNB's carries the code PNB 1250. HDFC has a purpose built form, 946. Union Bank uses SRF-1, section 8. Your account number does not change in any case.
Can you keep using the old cheque book and debit card?
Generally yes, and some banks say so expressly. But cheques already issued in the old name continue clearing, so tell your payees and hold significant payments until the new book arrives.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to update Aadhaar before the bank will change my name?
No. Under an RBI circular giving effect to an amendment to the Prevention of Money-laundering (Maintenance of Records) Rules, 2005, a document remains officially valid despite a subsequent change of name, provided it is supported by a State Government marriage certificate or a gazette notification. So your old Aadhaar plus the linking document is valid. Updating Aadhaar first is still good sequencing, but it is not a precondition, and believing it is can cost weeks.
What is the exact rule, and where does it come from?
RBI circular RBI/2015-16/213, DBR.AML.BC.No. 46/14.01.001/2015-16 dated 29 October 2015, giving effect to the Prevention of Money-laundering (Maintenance of Records) Third Amendment Rules, 2015, notified as G.S.R. 730(E) on 22 September 2015, which inserted an Explanation into Rule 2(d). It provides that a document shall be deemed to be an officially valid document even if there is a change in the name subsequent to its issuance, provided it is supported by a marriage certificate issued by the State Government or a Gazette notification indicating such a change of name.
Which documents does the rule name?
A marriage certificate issued by the State Government, or a Gazette notification indicating the change of name. Those are the two it specifies for this purpose, which makes the gazette rather more than a nice to have: it is one of only two documents capable of preserving the validity of an identity document issued in a former name.
How long do I have to tell the bank?
The Reserve Bank's KYC FAQ states that the customer shall submit the updated officially valid document or other documents to the regulated entity within 30 days of the update, change or modification in the documents. The clock runs from the document changing rather than from the wedding or the decree.
Can my account be frozen while this is pending?
The RBI (KYC) (Amendment) Directions, 2025 of 12 June 2025 require at least three advance intimations including one by letter before a periodic updation falls due, and at least three reminders including one by letter afterwards, in force from 1 January 2026. The Second Amendment Directions of 14 August 2025 add that no KYC application shall be rejected without application of mind. If your account was restricted without any of that, ask about it. The separate relaxation window that ran to 30 June 2026 has closed.
Can a self declaration be used for a name change?
No. The 2025 amendment allowing business correspondents to collect a self declaration applies where there is no change in KYC information, or a change only in address details. A change of name is neither, so it requires the documentary route with the certificate or the gazette.
Do I need a gazette for a surname change after marriage?
Usually not, because the marriage certificate is itself one of the two named documents. A gazette is generally needed where the certificate does not establish the name you actually want, or for a full or first name change.
Does one request cover all my accounts?
Within a bank, a name change applies across all accounts linked to your Customer ID, so a savings account, deposits and a loan under the same ID are updated together. Ask the bank to confirm which accounts fall under it, because an older account opened at a different branch can sit under a separate Customer ID without anybody noticing.
What is CKYC and does it help?
The Central KYC Records Registry maintained by CERSAI holds a centralised record that participating banks, NBFCs, insurers and mutual funds can access. Submit a modification form with updated proof at a participating institution, and once verified and uploaded the change reflects across institutions linked to your profile. Records from before 2017 may not have been migrated, and duplicate CKYC IDs can be merged on request.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Banks generally do not charge for a name or KYC update. Processing is reported from about 4 working days at some private banks to 7 to 15 working days more generally, with public sector banks often slower. A new cheque book or a replacement card may carry the usual charges, which are ordinary charges rather than name change charges.
My marriage certificate shows my maiden name and my husband's name, but not the name I want. Is that a problem?
It can be. Where the certificate does not directly show the combination you are asking for, banks may want additional documentation explaining it. This is a different failure from a certificate showing only one name: here it shows both and still not the version you want recorded. In that situation a gazette notification is often the cleaner route.
Should I do the bank before or after the passport?
Bank before passport. The passport office checks Aadhaar and PAN, and wants two documents already carrying the new name, so having the bank updated as well means everything downstream already agrees. Thanks to the RBI rule, the bank can also come earlier than most guides suggest.

In short
Everything on this page in twelve lines
- You do not have to wait for Aadhaar. Under an RBI rule your identity document in the old name remains officially valid, provided you produce a State Government marriage certificate or a gazette notification alongside it.
- It went to every bank, NBFC, primary urban co-operative bank and payment system provider, and the Reserve Bank restated it in its FAQ of 9 June 2025.
- The rule names exactly two documents, which is a clearer statement of what a gazette is for than anything on a service provider's website.
- You have 30 days from the document changing to give the bank the updated papers.
- But a change of name is a full re-KYC, not a light edit: paragraph 38 says the bank runs the process it would run for a new customer.
- The bank owes you three advance intimations including one by letter, three reminders afterwards, and no rejection without application of mind.
- A name change cannot be done by self declaration through a business correspondent, because that route covers no change or address only.
- One request covers every account under the same Customer ID, so ask for the list, because an old account can sit under a different one.
- Credit cards, demat accounts, lockers and joint holders are separate, and a nomination is a different instruction entirely.
- A CKYC modification can carry the change to other institutions, though records from before 2017 may not be there and duplicate identifiers can be merged.
- SBI, PNB and Bank of Baroda print the same form wording. HDFC has a code, 946, and a real online route. ICICI runs on Aadhaar and rejects a PAN mismatch.
- The affidavit before a magistrate that other pages demand comes from shareholder forms, not deposit accounts. Old cheques keep clearing.
Send us the certificate before you go to the branch.
Tell us the name you want on record and send a photograph of your marriage certificate, decree or gazette. We will tell you whether that document actually establishes the name you are asking for, or whether it shows both names and still not the combination you want, which is the commonest way this fails at a counter. If a gazette notification would be cleaner we will prepare it properly, since it is one of only two documents the RBI rule names for this purpose. The branch form itself is free and short, and we will point you at it rather than invoice you for it.
