How many times can you change your name for numerology?

This is the most useful thing on the page and almost nobody says it.

A name update on Aadhaar is permitted twice in a lifetime. Beyond that, a special exception from a UIDAI Regional Office is required under the published procedure of 28 October 2021, which is not something to plan around.

Now consider who reads this page. A numerological recommendation is not always a one-off. People consult again after a few years, or consult somebody who works to a different system, or face a life event and are advised to adjust the spelling once more. That is entirely their business. But the record-keeping system does not accommodate it.

Somebody who adjusts a spelling once and adjusts it again has spent both. After that, a genuine future correction, an error somebody else makes, a spelling problem discovered at a passport office, becomes a bureaucratic problem rather than a form.

What goes wrong most often with this kind of name change?

Partial adoption, and it happens here more than with any other reason for changing a name.

The motivation behind a numerology change is usually about using the new name: introducing yourself by it, signing with it, having colleagues and clients use it. So the new spelling appears immediately on business cards, email signatures, social media, invoices, letterheads and the way people address you. And the documents, which are slow and dull and require queuing, get left.

The result is worse than either name on its own. You are professionally known as one person and legally another. A bank sees a mismatch on a cheque. An invoice does not match a PAN. A client's accounts department cannot reconcile a vendor name. A hotel booking does not match a passport. And every one of those is discovered at the moment it is least convenient.

So decide at the start which of these you are doing

Using it socially and professionally only

You can use any name you like socially and professionally without changing your legal identity, and that requires no paperwork at all. It is a legitimate choice and costs nothing.

Changing your legal identity

Then do it properly and finish it. Do the gazette first and change the business cards afterwards. That order costs you six weeks of patience and saves you years of explaining.

What you should not do is start using it everywhere and complete the documents later, because later has a way of not arriving, and the gap between the two is where the trouble lives.

Why does spelling precision matter more here than anywhere?

Because you are adopting a spelling you have never written before, and every hand it passes through is a chance for it to revert.

On an ordinary name change, the applicant knows what their name looks like and so does everyone around them. Here, the familiar version is the wrong one, and familiarity is exactly what typists rely on.

So write the exact new spelling on a piece of paper, in block letters, and hand that paper to every single person who types anything for you. Then read every proof: the affidavit before you swear it, the newspaper text before it prints, and the proforma before you sign. A single reverted letter anywhere in the chain means the file comes back, and on the Central route the fee is not refundable.

And decide the passport field split at the same time

If a visa is ever in view, what goes in the given name field and what in the surname field is a permanent decision, because it follows you onto every visa issued against that passport. Deciding it now, alongside the spelling, costs nothing. Deciding it later means another reissue.

One requirement worth checking before you start

The address you put on the gazette application will be printed in the notification, and UIDAI's guidance is that the address details in the gazette should match your Aadhaar. Check your Aadhaar address before drafting the affidavit, not after publication. If the two are going to differ, either update Aadhaar first or use the address that matches it. It costs nothing to get right and a rejection costs both a fee and one of your two permitted changes.

Numerology name change: Adopting a different spelling of an existing name on numerological or astrological advice. It is a commonly accepted reason, it follows the ordinary legal route, and it is filed as a change of name rather than as a correction.
Change of name: Adopting a name or spelling different from the one on the record, as opposed to fixing an error somebody else made. Because the new form appears on no existing document, a gazette notification is what establishes the link between the two.
Name correction: A fix to a record that is wrong, where the correct form usually already appears on an earlier and more reliable document. Similar pronunciation does not by itself make a variation a correction.

Proforma: The prescribed form submitted with the file, computer typed rather than handwritten, in duplicate, signed and attested, carrying the details of two witnesses. It is one of the four places a new spelling can quietly revert.
Demographic update: An Aadhaar change to name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile or email, as distinct from a biometric update. It is charged per attempt and the fee is not refunded if the request is rejected.
Exception handling process: The UIDAI route for a name update request that falls outside the ordinary permitted number, governed by a published standard operating procedure dated 28 October 2021 and decided by a Regional Office rather than at a counter.
Passport field split: The decision about what goes in the given name field and what in the surname field on a passport. It is permanent in effect, because every visa issued against that passport carries it.
BharatKosh: The Government of India Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in, through which the Central Gazette fee is paid. It is the only accepted channel, and the payment is non-refundable.

Numerology, or personal preference. You do not need to explain the calculation, name a consultant, or justify the change. The affidavit asks for a reason to be stated, not defended.

Do I actually need a gazette for this?

Yes, and this is one of the few cases where the honest answer is yes. The new spelling appears on no other document you hold, so nothing else can establish that the old and new names belong to the same person.

Can I file it as a spelling correction instead?

No. A correction is where the record is wrong. Here the record is right and you are choosing something different, so it is a change. Similar pronunciation does not make a variation automatically acceptable, and authorities may check the earliest records.

Do I need a court order?

No. No court is involved. The process is an affidavit, two newspaper notices and a gazette notification.

How many times can I do this?

A name update on Aadhaar is permitted only twice in a lifetime, after which a special exception from a Regional Office is required under the published procedure of 28 October 2021. If a further adjustment may be advised later, settle on one final spelling now rather than doing it in stages.

What happens if my Aadhaar update is rejected?

The fee is charged per attempt and is not refunded, and the attempt is spent. That is why the spelling and the address should be checked before you apply, not after.

Can I just start using the new spelling without doing the paperwork?

You can use any name you like socially and professionally without changing your legal identity, and that requires nothing. What causes trouble is using it publicly while your documents say something else, which leaves two names in active circulation.

What order should I do things in?

Gazette first, then Aadhaar, PAN, bank, passport, then employer, business and public-facing records. Business cards last, not first.

How do I stop people typing the old spelling?

Write the new spelling in block letters on a piece of paper and give it to everyone who types anything for you: the notary's typist, the newspaper agent, the person filling the proforma. Then read every proof before it is printed or signed.

Does the address on the gazette matter?

Yes. UIDAI's guidance is that the address details in the gazette should match your Aadhaar, so check your Aadhaar address before drafting the affidavit rather than after publication.

What does it cost?

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult on the Central route, plus the affidavit and the two newspaper notices, so roughly Rs 2,000 to Rs 6,000 in total. State routes may be cheaper for records held inside that state.

How do I pay the fee?

Only through bharatkosh.gov.in. Demand drafts are not accepted and the fee is non-refundable, which is a reason to have the file checked before it goes rather than after it comes back.

Do I need to submit a CD?

No. The soft copy is submitted as a file. Older checklists still asking for a compact disc are years out of date.

Will I get a printed gazette by post?

No. Hard copies ceased on 1 October 2015. You download the PDF free from egazette.gov.in, using Control and F to find your name, and it needs no certification.

Can I pay to publish faster?

No. There is no expedited Government processing. Anybody offering speed is describing their own turnaround in preparing the file.

Does the gazette update my Aadhaar and PAN automatically?

No. It creates the proof. Each authority has its own correction process and needs its own application.

Can I change my child's name for numerological reasons?

A parent or legal guardian may apply, with the child's birth certificate, and the minor fee applies. Where both parents have rights, both should sign. Bear in mind that the child's own two permitted Aadhaar changes are being spent.

Will this actually improve my luck or prospects?

That is not a documentation question and we have no standing to answer it. What we can tell you is what the paperwork does, what it costs, and how to get it right.

Why this page says the opposite of our other ones. On the marriage and divorce guides we tell readers that a certificate or a decree usually does the work and a gazette is often unnecessary. Here the opposite is true and it is worth saying plainly, because it makes the honest position credible rather than reflexively contrarian. A numerology change produces a spelling that appears on no other document anywhere, so nothing exists to link the old and new names. That is exactly the situation a gazette is for.

The warning that matters most, and that nobody else prints. A name update on Aadhaar is permitted twice in a lifetime. Numerological advice is the one category where people genuinely come back: a different consultant, a different system of calculation, a life event, and a second adjustment is proposed. Somebody who adjusts a spelling twice has spent both. We have put it near the top of the page rather than buried in a note, because it is the single most useful thing to tell this reader, and because it argues for settling the final spelling properly before anything is filed. That is honest service rather than a sales line, and it costs us the second job.

What we deliberately did not write. Nothing about which letters or numbers are auspicious. No calculation method. No examples of well known people who changed their names.
